  • rifHnian Local Author to Promote NC Mountain Biking on Public TV by Mary Ellen Hammond Milestone Press ALMOND, NC— Local mountain bike guidebook author Jim Parham will appear on public television on November 8 in a program promoting responsible mountain biking in western North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest. The program, entitled "Pedaling Pisgah," is part of public television's Anyplace Wild series, and will be aired over North Carolina's public television network. Parham, a North Carolina native and resident of Swain County, is the author of eight guidebooks, including the six-volume Off the Beaten Track mountain bike guide series for the Southeast. He will appear on Anyplace Wild as a guest host, cycling on the Blue Ridge Parkway and along mountain bike trails in Pisgah National Forest, describing proper trail etiquette and maintenance, and discussing the history of the National Forest. In the course of the 20-minute show, Parham and Anyplace Wild host Arlene Burns encounter horses and riders, volun teer trail maintenance workers and other forest users in Pisgah trails. "Helping with this program was a great opportunity for me to talk about activities and places dear to my heart," says Parham. "Pisgah National Forest is an awesome multiuse resource for those of us who live near it or are close enough to visit it. Trail conservation goes hand in hand with responsible mountain biking, and off- road cyclists can do a lot to conserve trail resources simply by paying attention to how they ride, and by volunteering trail maintenance time. All these issues are addressed by the show. Anyplace Wild is broadcast nationally, so I'm very excited about spreading the word." Anyplace Wild's "Pedaling Pisgah" program is currently scheduled to air on North Carolina's public television stations on Sunday, November 8, at 11:00 a.m. Information about Jim Parham's mountain guidebooks, including one for Pisgah National Forest, is available from Milestone Press, P.O. Box 158, Almond, NC 28702, phone 828-488-6601, or on the world wide web at www.milestonepress.com. The show will include one-of-a-kind books and prints from the artist's collection. These works are produced using handmade paper, which has been painted and written on, and in some cases ornamented with gold leaf in the manner of illuminated manuscripts. The subject matter of Mr. Schade's artwork is often humorous, concocted from fractured versions of historical tales and invented histories from the artist's imagination. His ongoing fascination with animals is seen throughout, particularly in his NOHA series which culminates in the installation piece Noha 's Dinner Party. Schade, who lives in western Massachusetts, is a Professor of Art at Sage Junior College in Albany, NY. He received an MA in painting and printmaking from the State University of New York at Albany in 1971 and an MFA in Printmaking from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI, in 1973. He has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad and has received a number of important grants. The Belk Gallery is open from 9-5 Monday through Friday, or by appointment.
