'Oedipus' to show here April 14-19 The University Players will present Sophocles' "Oedipus the King," April 14- 19, at 7:30 p.m., in the Little Theater. Considered to be the masterpiece of the hundred or more plays by Sophocles, "Oedipus the King" has been praised through the ages for its ingeniously constructed plot and extraordinary insight into human motive and circumstances. Although considered oneof the representative great works of Greek Theater, the play's themes are universal in nature; timeless and enjoyed by every culture. Directed by senior Speech and theater arts major Marc Calloway, the cast includes: Ken Baldwin; Brenda Carver, Jeff Clark, Pam Cook, Greg Daugherty, Ron M. Fender, Robert Funk, Nancy Georgion, Samuel Gray, Steve Helms, Larry Hincher, Meg Horton, Will Horton, Martha Huntley, William Lambert, Cecelia Neal, Kelly Ray, Chuck Smith, David Walters, Randall D. Willis, David Cashion and Bo New- some. Tickets are $1.50 for a- dults and 75e for students. Reservations can be made by calling the department of speech and theater arts, 293-7491. Commissioners to appeal injunction halting airport The Jackson County com- missioners announced yesterday they would appeal a recent superior court ruling that stopped construction on the Berry Ridge airport site. Bruce Wike, full-time commissioner, said the board had met in a special session on April 3 and allocated $10,000 for legal fees to finance the appeal. The date of the appeal has not been set. In announcing the intention to appeal, Wike said the injunction given two weeks ago by Judge Robert Uewis was ''very damaging to the county and the taxpayers of the county." He also stated that if the decision was allowed to stand, it could have atraumatic affect on all airports" being constructed in the state now with the help of state funds. Wike said about 10 others were being constructed in North Caro- 1 ina. Wike said the ruling could also affect the federal government's willingness to give money to Jackson County. "If the airport is unconstitutional," said Wike, other things the county is providing might be too. According to Wike, Jackson County receives about $7 million each year in federal grants, and all of this might be withheld if the ruling isn't overturned. t'reighton "Zeke" Sossa- man, county attorney, could not be reached last night for comment on the appeal. However, Ms. Veronica Nicholas, a member of the Citizens Against the Airport, said last night that the committee would continue its fight against the airport. Candidates give platforms; four file at last minute by Sager Williams After a last-minute flurry of activity, four students have filed for student government president, and three for vice president at the close of the filing period yesterday. Six of the seven candidates met last night in a traditional face-to- face question-answer session sponsored by the Western Carolinian. Roland Johnson, current SGA vice president and a candidate for president, said his campaign is based on "What I've done, what I'm doing, and what I'm going to do," He told the audience that he has fulfilled every campaign promise he made during last year's election campaign. Among his accomplishments, Johnson listed his testimony at a hearing investigating complaints about poor telephone service, support for obtaining a policy statement from the SBI concerning the use of undercover informants on campus, the adoption by the university of a pro-rated parking sticker, and the establishment of a student legal aid service. "I bitch just as much as you do," said Johnson. "That's why I'm in student government," The junior from Clayton said he planned to reorganize student government productions into a large committee to better handle big- name entertainment. Johnson stated that the student courts also needed reorganizing. He declared "It's time to get administrative bullshit out of the way, especially during registration." Johnson said he plans to "take away" the absolute power student housing wields, particularly in regard to the one-sided housing contract, which in order to get out of, a student "must die, get VI), or marry." He concluded his remarks by saying, "I don't want to sound like a hypocrite, but I have a Bible right over there in my pocket. If you want, I'll get it out and swear on it to do what I've promised here tonight."
