By Hank Komodowski Sports Editor Western Carolina University's women's basketball team got off on the right foot Tuesday night as the lady Cats swept to a 70-56 victory over Appalachian State University in Reid Gym. Leading 36-31 at the half, the Western squad combined a stingy defense with the hot shooting of Brenda Halford and Judy Stroud to outscore Appal- achian 34 to 25 in the second period and coast to the final 14 point margin. Halfort and Stroud led the Cats' efforts with 17 points apiece. Sharon Jones added another 13 for the victors. wcu coach Betty Westmoreland was happy over the first game of the season, yet added that the team started off ''playing sloppy and were slow getting untracked." She praised the teamwork of the girls, however, and said, "This is the kind of team where you don't depend on just one scorer. It's just a question of which ones are hot that night." WCU's Brenda Johnson did not score her usual average of points but severely intimidated the Appalachian shooters, blocking numerous shots while controlling the boards for Western, The win will send Western Carolina into this weekend's tournament with UNC-Chapel Hill and East Carolina with a 1-0 record. ASU's slate now stands at 1-2. Grapplers tie with Maryville Before a screaming and shouting WCU crowd, the Western Carolina University wrestling team came roaring back from a big defecit to gain a 20-20 draw Tuesday night with wrestling power Maryville College. Down by six points going into the last three matches, WCU's Mitch Burr sneaked out an 8-7 win in the 177-pound class to start the comeback. Western senior Jerry Toy then manhandled his opponent for a 10-3 victory and the rally continued. WCU heavyweight Rex Wells fell behind in his match 4-1, but came on strong to tie the score at 4-4. With the resulting draw, Western gained a tie with Maryville, a team which shut out the Cats 40-0 last year. Other winners for the Western squad were Sammy Chewn- ing, who won on a forfeit in the 118-pound class, John Simpson (142), who took an 8-3 win, and John Joyner (158), who eked out an 8-7 decision. WCU assistant coach Steve Nesson praised the team's effort, and added that "more improvement is yet to come." Comparing the team to last year's squad Nelson said, "At this stage of the season, we are 100 per cent better than we were last year." The win gave the Cat grapplers an undefeated 1-0-1 mark on the young season. Western's next outing will be Friday when the wrestlers take on Pembroke State in an away match. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
