  • PAGE 6 Coach Conley says: THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Cats'problem 'mental' YAMA Rl 1 I Box 215 / Waynesville By Pass (ISA 23) Waynesviilfl. North Carolina 28786 1704) 452 5447 Reid Gymnasium will be filled Thursday evening with a lot of curious basketball fans when Western Carolina University's and Carson-Newman College's basketball teams tangle. Many of the onlookers will be there to see their WCU team for the first time in six weeks while others will be there to see if the Catamounts new head coach can turn them into a winner. A lot has happened to the Cats since their last home game back on IX-cember 4. However, what most of the WCU fans remember is that the Cats have lost four in a row and their head coach for the past five and one-half seasons resigned and a new coach has taken over. Jim Hartbarger resigned last Sunday in the midst of a 5-7 campaign and Fred Conley, his assistant for the past six months, was elevated to the head coach post for the remainder of this season. "We can do it, but it is going to take a lot of hard work and dedication from this team and a lot of support from the student body and our other fans," he said. "I am adjusting to this new situation and the players are adjusting to me. They are a little confused at this time with all the developments," he con* tinued. "We are making some changes and it will take some time for all of it to sink in. However, they have shown me that thev want to win and that Qr>b &o<xcKbr«n<l T- sAvrts // Posters Irv^orted o'.^S \l/ Sat. Now all we need is the right attitude," he added. Conley further stated that he plans some -changes in the Catamounts offense, but did not indicate any major changes in the use of the team's personnel. "Our problem is not physical. It is mental," he said. Ski Club to sponsor meet Fri. The Western Carolina Ski Club will sponsor the first of six intercollegiate ski races this Friday at Cataloochee Ski Resort in Maggie.
