  • PAGE 4 THURSDAY MAY 23, 1974 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thoughts at large (Roll over, Sydney Harris) Why was it necessary for the WCU Board of Trustees to set up a tenure appeals hearing committee when it intended to ignore that committee's advice? + + + SGA President Donna Clemmer has already broken her first campaign promise. Instead of dividing the SGP manager's position among a three-man committee (which action she said last month would make SGP more effective), she has chosen the customary one person. + + + The last SGP concert of the year will occur next Tuesday night. We suspect that music lovers will not be the only ones prepared for it. Don't take any wooden turtles, kiddies. + + + The monsoon season has struck Cullowhee again. What can be more demoralizing than five straight days of rain? (Of course, by the time this reaches print, the sky will be cloudless.) + + + Any tax-supported university that needs to recruit students on a large scale is probably not worth going to. What WCU really needs is fewer students. The best way to accomplish this is to make the Junior English Proficiency Test an entrance examination. + + + In case you haven't noticed, Brown Cafeteria has finally received a "Grade A" sanitation rating from the State Board of Health. How else could one expect the Board of Trustees to eat lunch there after their monthly meetings? Responding to a petition filed Feb. 21 by Ralph Nader's Health Research Group, the commission had asked manufacturers to submit within 10days specifica- tions and identification data for their products, so that consumers can be warned. More than 5jL^2i>roso' Pro" ducts have already been placed on the Food and Drug Administration's weekly recall list, classified as "possibly or po= tentially life threatening or hazardous to health," Vinyl chloride is used as a propellant primarily in hair sprays, deodorants and vaporizers. It is a member of a larger group of chemicals cal- larger group of chemicals called the halogenated hydrocarbon propellants (HHP). According to a study of aer osol sprays published las1: October by the Center for Science and the Public Interest (CSPI), inhaling HHP chemicals affects the heart's pacemaker and can cause heart arrest and death, CSPI cited four separate tests done over the last three years that substantiated its conclusion, Since the CSPI, Nader's group and other consumer organizations ha\e been petitioning the Consumer Product Safety Commission to reevaluate the safety of all aerosol products,.
