  • PAGE 6 THURSDAY MAY 16, 1974 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN WCU Ambulance Service answers "disaster" call Is he still alive? This was the question that was being asked last Thursday after the Wednesday night, May 8, "disaster" at WCU's new football stadium. At 6:3l' p.m., a phone call from the University infirmary- interrupted the weekly meeting of the WCU Ambulance Service. "A man has fallen off the back of the new stadium and is bleeding severely," the nurse reported. Four men responded with the ambulance accompanied by others in another emergency vehicle. Arriving at the rear entrance to the new stadium, the ambulance crew was separated from their victim by a locked gate and chain-link fence, A radio call was placed to the campus security patrol to unlock the gate. Through the fence the crew could see the motionless body of a student lying with his head in a puddle of blood on the cement floor. The crew had to make their entrance from the front of the stadium and carry their equipment a quarter of a mile to the unconscious man. Excited friends of the victim pleaded with the crew to "hurry Many hours of training were put to test.. While checking to see if he was breathing and feeling for a pulse, they did not move him, His buddies had already informed the crew that the victim had fallen three stories from the rear excess stairway leading to the press- box. Because of the nature of his fall, the crew had grounds to assume head, neck, back, and internal injuries. Vital signs were checked; then he was examined for fracture sand bleeding. His right ear and the hair on the right side of his head were coated with blood. After examination, a cervical collar (neck brace) was placed around his neck, the neck being further stablized with sandbags, and he was gently placed on a body -length wooden backboard to protect him from further in jury during transportation to medical facilities, The Infirm ary was notified by radio concerning the youth's accident. The biggest shock came to the crew inside the infirmary emergency room when the crews emergency care instruct tor walked in a nd tapped the victim, David Tilson, on the shoulder and told him to sit up The instructor turned to the startled crew and said, "This has been an evaluation of your past three quarters of training, totaling 1,271 man- hours. This statement explained why the veteran in=» structor and the Infirmary Physician's Associate had been so passive on the call, offering very little assistance and declining to examine and treat the victim. Back down at the stadium, the victim, his injuries, and treatment were assessed by C.W. Tilson, emergency care instructor; Walter Pugh, Infir= mary Physician's Associate; Mrs. June Lovin, Infirmary- Nurse,; and Delbert Hall, crew chief. The entire call was reviewed in a one hour training session. ^^^- The WCU Ambulance Service ^^ is composed of eighteen uni- V^ versity students under the direction of the Infirmary physician , Dr. Hugh A, Matthews and Mr, Walter B, Pugh, P,A.
