  • PAGE fHE WESTERN CAROLINIAN A new calendar? This Thursday, students will be asked to express their opinions concerning changing the academic calendar from the present quarter system to some variant of the semester system. The ad hoc committee on alternative calendars has submitted a report, the text of which appeared in the April 18 Western Carolinian. Although student input will not necessarily be the deciding factor and in no event will any change be made before the 1975-76 school year, we believe it is important that all students cast an informed vote on May 2. We believe that among the alternatives the "early semester" system is best because it would bring WCU into line with other N. C. schools, it provides sufficient time during terms to write papers, it has a long Christmas vacation between terms, it would reduce the frequency of exams, and, besides, Chapel Hill said so. The calendar issue will be included on the SGA election ballot along with the races for student senators, publications editors and business managers, and University Center president and vice- president. Cut off the heat The WCU engineers aren't working very hard to solve the energy crisis. Yesterday during the mid-80 temperatures the boilers were fired up sending unwanted heat to all the buildings on campus. While the heating oil shortage seems to have passed if it ever existed, we can see no reason for the waste of fuel yesterday. Coeds baking in the sun were probably horrified when they returned to their rooms to find them hotter than the temperatures outside. While we praise the engineers attempts to keep everyone warm, there comes a time during the year when air conditioners are preferred to heaters. Chilly weather may return, but until it does cut off the heat boys.—DAS. n-& \/Vi=STE^ CjU^oLlftHAKl Published twice weekly through the academic year and weekly during the summer by the students of Western Carolina University. Indeed, their pants (very a full two inches above their ankles, exposing black socks, encased by black wing-tipped shoes.. Ye,, this is certainly a in ;rk of some campus fraternides, but the disgusting difference was the unconcealed state of excitement in these people. Their body movements were similar to football warm-up drills, and somewhat mechanical. Caught up by this unusual sight, I found a level spot of ground and continued to observe them from a distance. After reaching a state of excitement where their shoes were blurred by the rapid up and (low:: motion of their feet, they finally began to move. The men flew into the back door of a dorm and emerged moments' later suspending a Hippie by the hair of his head so that his toes skimmed the ground only o.i the highter spots. The Hippie was secured by some type of blue-black metal object against his head, which at a distance I could not identify. Later, rumor proved that these people were some kind of special agents cleaning up on those long haired, dirty, dangerous criminals, better known to the underground as pot- heads. Now all of (his is well and good, because if these people w?,it to smoke pot they can go to Oregon or someplace where it is legal. By doing this they won't commit any more per verted sexualacts, murderSf and other assorted crimes that all pot-heads do here in Cullowhee, The whole point of this letter is this: Pot is not habit forming so these people do not have to steal to support their illegal highs. In factf there is so much free put ;n Cullowhee one need never buy any. But, SOMEONE around here has got a habit of some kind that they support by stealing. This fact is readily apparent if one merely asks the sheriff of this county how many thefts have been reported tn the Cullowhee area in the past few months. The number is un- believeable. Why don't any of THESE people get caught? Why have I never seen any of these special agents dragging these thieves off? In fact, I've never heard rumors of these thieves getting caught, Following this assinine logic I mist conclude that: I. Theft is not covered in the 007 special agent handbook, and is therefore not their responsibility, 2.. Theft is covered in the handbook, and if it is, one of the following must apply: a. The agents are afraid of the thieves. bo The agents know about the thieves, but can not catch them, c. The thieves are paying the agents to leave them alone, d. Something not covered in a., through c. What is it Mr, S., Mr. Agent'.' What is the reason these thter.-s are not getting caught? Mark on your answer sheet 1,, 2,(a.-b.), or is it; 3. None of the above? Name withheld by request Hardy thanks Fellow St id- '.is, Thanks for all the support in the past election and the support through the tedious ordeal. I can only say that 'the journey' will be postponed till a later decade in Cullowhee, CHANGE is a nasty word. Again, thank you Sincerely, Wardell Townsend Calendar Together w ith the entire com aiittee on alternative academ'r calendars, I urge every student to vote in lie calendar ref - erendum th's Thursdv , 2 Via; Tie referendum will be held jointly with the SGA Senate elections, and ballots will be available a' the poll ing place in the Student Center What is at stake is whether or no* Western will continue with its preseni quarter system or shift to one of four possible semester systems by the fall of 19?), This is a very important decision one too Important to be made without the advice and counsel of both faculty and students. The faculty has already been polled, but their ballots will not be counted until 2 May, so the results of the faculty poll can ii no way infiuen.ee the student vote. The clioi?e again is between the quarter system and four alternative semester systems: the traditional semester, the early semester, the trimester, aid the 4-1-4 system. A thorough description of each of these calendars is included in the Calendar Commit ,e!s report published in the WESTERN CAROLINIAN of 18 April. Copies of he report will be available at the pollst, Please review the report and cast an informed vote, J. Karl Nicholas Asst, Professor of English Comnr'ttee Chairman Clubs & Organizations: Requests for appropriations must be submitted to the office of the SGA Comptroller no later than April 30, 1974. Forms are now available at the Comptrollers office in the SGA offices in the UC W^^V.sVA^^^'AV'VVAM.Ms.'l
