  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY, JANUARY 17, 1974 PAGE 3 WCU Mathematics Department Sponsors High School Contest The department of Mathematics at Western Carolina University has announced that it will sponsor the Fourth Annual High School Mathematics Contest to be held on the WCU campus Thursday, April 25, 1974. The contest will be open to students from the sixty-sixpub- lic, private and parochial junior and senior high schools «f the sixteen western-most counties which comprise the N.C. Eighth Educational District. They are: Cherokee, Clay, Craham, Macon, Swain, Jackson, Haywood, Transylvania, Henderson, Buncombe, Madison, Polk, Rutherford,McDowell, Yancey and Mitchell. Dr. J. Pelham Thomas, Head of the WCU Mathematics 1X>- partment, has indicated that the contest is designed to stimulate interest in mathematics by encouraging more students to include it in their program of study, and to honor outstanding Health Care Workshops Receive $10,918 Grant For Training Institutes WCU's School of Health Sciences and Services has been a- warded a North Carolina Regional Medical Programs grant for the implementation of workshops designed to familiarize the health care community with the Physician's Assistant service program. The $10,918 grant will be used for program planning and the presentation of training institutes in 11 Western North Carolina counties, according to Dr. John F. Bergner Jr., dean of the School of Health Sciences and Services and project director. The program would Involve selected physicians and other health care personnel in the development of a collaborative Physician's Assistant program at Western Carolina University, Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem and Duke University in Durham. The institutes and seminars will be presented through July and will feature speakers and consultants aware of the problems, methodologies and suc cesses experienced by the Physician's Assistant program in N.C. and other areas. Over 100 participants, primarily physicians, are expected to attend two regional institutes. Several smaller workshops for other health care personnel are tentatively scheduled for Asheville, Waynesville, Bryson City, Murphy and Cullowhee. University - trained physician's assistants help physicians by providing diagnostic and therapeutic medical care under the physician's supervision. Members of the advisory committee of the WCU project are Dr. George W. Brown of Waynesville, Drs. Gerald Eller and Hugh Matthews and Prof. Harry Ramsey of Cullowhee; Drs. Harvey Estes and Dale Lindsay of Duke; Dr. Iceland Powers of Bowman Grav; Dr. William E. Mitchell of Bryson City; Dr. John McLeod "of Asheville; Dr. Charles Van Gorder of Andrews; and Dr. Bergner. Business Dean Search Progresses On Schedule The search for a dean of the Western Carolina University- School of Business is progressing on schedule, according to Professor Jack Barnctt, chairman of an advisory selection committee. Barnctt said that personal interviews should begin on campus by the latter part of February. The committee has established a closing date of January 31 for receiving applications for the position. The committee has reported that the number of top candi dates is nearing the desired ten, from which a smaller number will be invited to campus for the personal screeningpro- cess. Chairman Barnett stated that persons other than committee members will have an opportunity to meet with each candidate. Interview time will be established for School of Business department heads and stiff members, vice-chancellors, and other deans and interested administrators. Student representatives from the School of Business also will be invited to participate in the interviews, he said. mathematics students by recognition at the contest, their school and in their community. Of the sixty-six junior and senior high schools in the Eighth Educational District, thirty- four schools have indicated tentative interest towards participating in the contest. Competition will be divided into four divisions: Algebra I, Algebra 11, Ceometry and Comprehensive. The number of contestants each school may send to each division of the contest will be based upon the number of students the school has enrolled in that particular subject. Certificates of Merit will be presented to the top contestants in each division while Certificates of Participation will be presented to all student participants. Plaques will be presented to the schools making the best over-all showing in the contest. In addition, scholarships will be awarded to the top students in the senior level Comprehensive Division.
