  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday February 15, 1973 page 3 Conference On Southern !ThB western Carolinian Africa May 3 And May 4 I SPORTS TRIVIA QUIZ Student participation and involvement are a few of the objectives hoped to be attained in- a Conference on Southern Africa to be sponsored by the Council on International Relations and United Nations Affairs on May 3 and 4, According to Lee Thompson, president of CIRUNA, a dozen specialists in African affairs will be brought in for the conference. Economic and social issues will be stressed , along with the revolutionary side of Southern Africa, in hopes of presenting a " balanced program." Thompson said. One of the my.in aspects of this conference is to better aquaint students with what is presentli happening in Southern Africa, how the future looks, and what knowledgeable people have to say about southern African affairs. "More student involvement" is hoped for in this conference, Thompson suited. The entire program is oriented toward the student, In place of formal reading of papers, this year's program will consist almost entirely of debate and panel discussion types of presentation. Among the people to speak at the conference will be Judge William Booth, former Human Rights Commissioner of New York City and present chairman of the American Committee on Africa, and Senator Gale McKee of Wyoming, who is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Sub-Committe on Africa, Ken Hansen, a student from Harvard who has just completed field studies in southern Africa will also speak.
