Coach Bill Haywood's players began their three-game streak with Voorhees College here last Friday despite the determined Tigers and their hard hitting pitcher. The Cats had a 4-0 lead before the Voorhees hurler connected on a single-run homer over the left field fence. Still pitching in the sixth, he came through again with a homerun with two men on base to tie the game 4-4. Western couldn't push across the winning run until the bottom of the eleventh inning when shortstop Jim Grove hustled home on a wild pitch to give the Cats a 3-1 win. Voorhees was a District 6 opponent as was Wofford on Saturday. The Terriers fell victim to a WCU blitz that pounded out 13 runs in the first two innings while Wofford remained scoreless. Eddie Davis opened the floodgates to the Catamount hitters with a two-run homer in the first inning and Jimmy laughridge blistered the Terrier pitching for six more runs in the first two innings. Laughridge smacked a 390- foot grand slam homerun and had two more RBI's on a two- run single. Wofford attempted a comeback in third inning as they pushed across five runs, but Western catcher Ted Whitworth doubled home two more Catamount runs in the fifth and hit a solo homer in the eighth to keep WCC ahead by more than 1U runs. Western's 17 hit attack accounted for a total of 20 runs in the game to the Terriers 11. That win boosted the Cats' District record to 3-1 for. the season and freshman Randy Guy went eight innings to chalk up his second win against three losses. The Cats win over Appalachian on the road in Boone marked the first time the Cats have taken two straight baseball victories over the Mountaineers since the early 1960's. Freshman righthander Jerry Ramsey led the Cats from the mound as he went the distance holding ASl to two runs. Ram sey aided his cause with two singles in the 3-2 win, but the winning run came in the top of the eighth on doubles bj Jim Grove and Gary Fishel' in a clutch situation, Fishel had a pair of doubles for the day, The Catamounts will be home today against red-hot South Carolina State who is leading the District scramble with a 5-0 record and have a spotless 9-0 record overall.
