  • Tuesday, September 22, 1970 Trinidad band to be here The 22-man Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band will appear in Reid Health and Physical Education Building at WCU at 8 p.m, Tuesday, Sept 22. The band's repertoire ranges from classical music to rock and roll, with calypso music a specialty. The Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band has performed twice for Queen Elizabeth of England, and has accompanied Dlonne Warwick, Llberace, and Donald 0' Connor on their concert tours. During Expo '67, the 1967 World's Fair in Montreal, the band performed at the Trinidad and Tobago pavilion. The concert is open to the public, and tickets will be available at the door for a nominal fee. THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THE TRIN.DAD TRIPOLI STEEL BAND. UCB retreat held at Camp Shelton Camp Shelton, WCU campsite located In the Glenville community and surrounded by the Glenville lake and Blue Ridge mountains, provided the setting for the University Center Board's pre-session planning conferences from September 13-15. All University Center Board members were invited to attend the three day retreat which, aside from meetings, included steak and hamburger cookouts, bridge games, and lounging around the lake and the surrounding area. The Center Board is undergoing a basic reorganization of both policy and programming which Is oriented toward the In volvement of all persons in this University community. With this change, there will be more activities provided for more people, including those who are frequently overlooked. Plans are being made which will involve married students, faculty wivesandhusbands, foreign students, and children, in addition to all other WCUstud- ents. Tentative activities for this year might include summer day camps for children, camping services, drug symposiums, bridal fashion shows, babysitting services, tubing races and bicycle races, car rallies, mobile home shows, weekend sledding and ski trips, lectures, carnivals,puppet shows, rodeos and small band weekend dances. Emphasis will be on the so cial, recreational, cultural, and educational services to the Un ■ Iversity and the surrounding communities. The University Center should become the most exciting place on campus where something will be happening ev • ery day for someone. Pending this reorganization, UCB will no longer be invol • ved in "big name" entertain ment on this campus. Page 15 Miss Martin new head of Department of Nursing Clair Eugene Martin, instructor of psychiatric nursing at the University of Florida, has been named head of the new Department of Nursingat West ern Carolina University, Martin, a native of I-ancas- ter, Pa,, received the bachelor of science in nursing degree from (ioshen College in Indiana and the master of science in nursing degree, with a major in psychiatric nursing, from the University of Florida, He is expected to receive a second master's degree— master of arts in sociology and nursing -this month from the University of Florida. His memberships include the American Nurses Association, and two national honorary soc • ieties. Alpha Kappa Delta (sociology) and Sigma Theta Tau (nursing). He was the reci pient of a Health, Educaton, and Welfare Research Fellow- ahlp Award In 1969. The nursing degree program was begun at WCU In the fall of 1969. The department this fall will enroll 33 freshmen, 15 sophomores, and 35 registered nurses. Street dance sponsored by Center Board The University Center Board will sponsor a street dance featuring "Willie Lee and the Hot Rain" (second appearance) on Friday, Sept. 25 in the parking lot of the University Center, Admission is FREE with ID and Student Activities card.
