Paul 'Bear' Bryant, who has become a coaching legend at the University of Alabama, spoke to a Western Carolina Fall Sports Banquet crowd of 350 Monday night on the subject of competition and preparation for It, Bryant highlighted a gala program designed to honor Western's football, soccer and cross country teams. His opening remarks were di rected toward long time friend and former Clemson head coach Frank Howard. He then turned iO one of Alabama's most successful and most publicized graduates—New York Jet quarterback Joe Namath. A humorous sidenote backed up Bryant's statement that Namath "wasn't lacking in confidence," In almost the same breath Bryant turned to a serious note and in five short minutes drilled deep into the core of his win ning philosophy, "By the year 1975, 50% of America's population will be under 21," Bryant stressed. "To succeed at all, you had better be ready to compete." "If you want to compete, first you must select an endeavor." In selecting an endeavor Bryant outlined three critical steps. "First, you must select something YOU CAN'T DO WITHOUT, something that is a part of you. Second, set a goal and work for it I set a goal every season, Bryant said, the national championship. I don't always reach It, but above all I try my very best to achieve it" Third, after you have your endeavor and your goal, adopt a plan you believe in so strongly that you won't compromise. Believe in your plan deeply and surround yourself with people that believe just that strongly in it. You must have people it means a lot to, from the janitors and secretaries right on up." "To achieve your goal you must tie with winners, people with CLASS, You must also tie to leaders (self-starters). I can't define class or leaders, Bryant confided, but they can be recognized." "You must also learn Uie difference of when to say I, me you or us." 'If it's good, it's YOU, 'If it's IAD, it's....' If it's bad, it's I." Bryant pointed out that everyone's plan must include "learning how to work. It's hard to teach." Bryant added/'but it can be taught on the football team. SeU discipline is the same way, You must learn how to fight (not fist fight). When you're down you gotta' get up and comeback and comeback. In striving for a conclusion Bryant mentioned "there is only a little difference in being na tional champion and being just average. There's just a little difference—the willingness to pay the price." Bryant concluded by reading a passage a mother of one of his former players had sent him on "The Price of Success." The verse was summarized with the short, but concise statement "the price of success means to study, and to work, but above all to PLAN," Following Bryant's address cross country head coach Mike Scanlan and assistant Paul Jones, soccer coach Doug Schrader, head football coach Bob Waters, and assistants John Wike and Don Denning presented letter awards, jackets and sweaters to members of their respective teams. First to receive awards was the cross country team. Distance ace and current school record holder Terry Helms was awarded the Most Valuable Runner trophy for the second consecutive year.
