THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN WCU To Join ACC In Foil Sam Swift, Athletic Director of Western Carolina University, is proud to announce that WCU, as of September, 1969, will join the Atlantic Coast Conference athletic association. Swift stated that toe ACC asked WCU to become a part of its group 24 seconds after the announcement was made that Western was leaving toe Carolinas Conference. The first football game next year Is slated with North Ca rolina State University. An 11-game schedule follows. The basketball schedule, as of yet, has not been set, Swift stated that the step up to toe ACC was a "Milestone in toe athletic history of Western Carolina." "I feel," Swift said, "that toe Atlantic Coast Conference has made a fine choice. Our only fear is that several teams have threatened to leave toe Conference because the competition is getting too rough." April Fool Edition Hula-Hoopers To Attend National Championships In Gardens The Western Carolina hula- hoop team, by downing Duke University in toe district championship, has earned toe right to continue to toe national championships at Madison Square Garden in New York. The judges in New York will be judging on basis of form, creativity, hoop balance, teeth, hair and nails and swivility of the waist The coaches of toe team, Mrs. Rocky McNamara and R. Dean Oscare predict excellent chances in the Gardens. This is the third successive year Western's team has gone as far as toe national tournament "Our chances this year are much better, though," Mrs. McNamara stated. "We have two girls, Liza Rayhemys and Carolyn May Gunch, who have extremely swively waists. Carolyn May, a native of New Orleans, is toe daughter of a belly dancer. The hereditary trait is amazing. Carolyn May Is on full scholarship." "The other two girls," R. Dean Oscare said, "are our beauty winners. Ruby Begonia and Modine Begonia are sisters from Florida. They have beautiful hair, teeth and nails and wonderful figures. "They can't swivel that well, but they are putting up a good front," he continued. "All In all, we're looking for toe championship." Two of toe girls, Miss Gunch and Miss Ruby Begonia, are veteran swivelers. All toe girls have been conditioning their waists for some time. Miss Gunch, toe captain of the team, is participating in toe 'Swivel-Marathon.' She can swivel while standing on one foot with her eyes closed and holding her breath, for 3 1/2 minutes. All interested men and women please come to the basement of the HIDE-A-WAY Wednesday April 3rd at 7:30 p.m. or stop by the VARSITY SHOP and see Carl Smith. ro&,TO£p Five Teams Leave ACC (MMC) It was announced yesterday that five teams have seceded from the Atlantic Coast Conference. North Carolina State University, toe University of North Carolina, St John's University, the University of South Carolina and Duke University have pulled out of the ACC and formed a conference of their own. No specific reason was given for toe secession, but Dean Smith of UNC, seemed to hint that it was because the competition was too rough. "A new team recently joined the ACC," Smith stated. "We five feel that this addition, coupled with other competition gave us a distinct readministered conglomeration."
