  • Page 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Wecrtber Interrupts Track Practice For 35 Runners By KEN BALL The recent barrage of foul weather interrupted practice for Coach Heath Whittle's track team. About thirty-five men have been preparing for the upcoming season for the past couple of weeks. Coach Whittle stated that he is opimistic about the team this season which will feature some outstanding performers returning from last season and some highly promising new- comers. Whittle said,''We have got good depth for the first time this season. There are two or three good men in all events except the sprints. I don't think we will have another situation this year like we had at son. John Tinsley, a transfer student from Brevard will improve our chances in the javelin throw. Also, Erick Berg will be returning to throw the shot put. Erick was third in the Conference last year. The high jump event, which was our weakest position last year, may be one of our strongest areas this season. At this point we have three men who are jumping over 6 feet: Tommy Jordan, JohnMcGowan, and Jimmy Dean. Two fresh- rhen, Tommy Baker and David Steppe also look good in this event, One of the biggest lifts to the track program has been provided by another transfer from Brevard, Tommy Jordan. Waynesville Wrestler Signs Letter-Of-lirtent With WCU the Mars Hill- Campbell meet last season where we won seven first place events, and still lost the meet. We expect to improve in the sprints with some of the football team coming out for track." Distance running should be one of WCU's strongest events this season. Most of the distance runners have already given a good account of themselves in Cross Country meets. Tom Gibbons and Ned Jones are both fine 880 men and Cross Country star Terry Helms will run the mile and 3-mile events. Hurdles this year will feature Rodger Jones, John Mc- Gowan, Carson Elder, Jimmy Deans, and Steve Koob. Last year's conference dis-- cus champion, Mike Metcalf, will be back for another sea- High Point Is First In Conference It is an accepted fact that the team which takes advantage of the highest number of opportunities is the team which is going to win the most games. High Point, which leads the Carolinas Conference standings, is one such team. Where High Point has used its opportunity the most sucessfully has been at the free throw line where it- is averaging 22 points a game. The Panthers have a healthy advantage in free throw shooting over the next most accurate team. High Point has made 74 per cent from the foul line while runnerup Newberry has hit only 69.8. Free throw shooting accounts for almost all of High Point's league-leading margin of victory. High Point is outscoring its opponents 15.7points a game, including a 9.5 edge in free throws. over 6 feet but is already showing outstanding ability in the pole vault. To quote Coach Whittle, "We are expecting some high achievements from Tommy." Dan Wait, a freshman, also shows promise in the pole vault event. We are expected to be strong in the long jump again this season with the return of last year's jumping star, Hayes Powell. The 1969 Track Schedule is as follows: George Hyatt of Waynesville, an undefeated wrestler in the 152-pound class at Tuscola High School, has signed a letter-of-intent with Western Carolina University. Hyatt, the son of Mr. and Mrs, Allen Hyatt, has 12 wins, no losses and two draws for Tuscola Coach Paul George this season. Hyatt is 5-foot-10,154 pounds. He has lettered for three seasons in wrestling and for one season in football. "We are very happy that George has decided to come to Western Carolina," Says WCU wrestling coach Bob Setzer, "He has tremendous po tential and is developing fast, ust beginning to reach his potential," Setzer says. Western Carolina is 2-4 in wrestling this season, it's first in varsity wrestling in nearly two decades. Thursday, February 20,1969 Day Students Down APO In Water Polo KEN BALL A strong swimming Day Student team sunk Alpha Phi Omega in water polo action Monday by a score of 29-2. Scoring was well balanced among three men on the Day Student team with Dave Baker leading with 12 points. Tom Sheppard hit the board for ten points while Don Brown got eight. APO got their only score on a free throw by Mike C reason. In the second game Monday Theta Xi put Pi Kappa Phi under with a score of 19-4. Dave Upchurch was high scorer for Theta Xi with 13 points followed by Mike Stamey with four and Larry Rhodes with two. Marvin Cope and Larry Long teamed up to score Pi Kap's four points. While Pi Kap and Theta Xi battled each other in the pool Monday night other fraternity league teams were getting in on the action on the basketball court.
