  • Page 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, January 30, 1969 faculty Downs KA, Takes Volleyball Championship Faculty team No. 1 finished an undefeated season in volleyball last week by downing Kappa Alpha in the All-Campus Championship play-off. Led by McConnell and Whittle, the faculty won the first game with a hard-played 15-13 victory over KA. The champions must win two out of three games in a play-off series and the faculty completely swamped their opponents 15-4, to make it two in a row. This match ends the volleyball action until next year, but intramural basketball went into full swing Tuesday night. Sigma Tau Sigma put on an impressive show of strength and romped to an easy 33-17 win over Delta Sigma Phi. Wison Boyd led the Sigma Taus with 13 points followed by Lonnie Padget with 7 and Pete Black with 6. Padget and Black controlled the Backboards most of the game. Jim Latham and Jackie Oenby led the Sigma defense, holding Delta Sig to only eleven points in the first half. Watson and Whitaker led the Delta Sig attack, each netting six points. Theta Xi powered past Alpha Phi Omega 39-28 as Mike Sta- mey gunned in 14 points for the winning cause. A tough Theta Xi defense held Richard Stewart, top intramural scorer last season, to only seven points. Tony Johnson was APO's top scorer with eight points, followed by Stewart, and Larry Dorsett with seven. Tau Kappa Epsilon fell to Pi Kappa Phi 36-28 in a hard- fought game. Pi Kap used a balanced scoring attack to down the TKE's with Gary Graham netting ten points, followed by Larry Houston with nine, Bill Bowman with seven, and Rick Keeler with six. Joe Rogers and Joe MUler were top men for TKE. Rogers added 13 points to the losing cause and Miller trailed with six. Pi Kappa Alpha ran up an easy score over Rotaract 36-12. Tom Steele led Pika with 13 tallies. The Rotaract team, who couldn't seem to find the basket had Johnny Baker as high scorer. DON'T FORGET YOUR VALENTINE! CENTER PHARMACY Cats Fall To L-R, 83-66, Lose Tournament Chance BY GARY TYLER Lenoir-Rhyne came back from a two point half-time deficit and hit 29 of 34 free throws to hand Western Carolina its seventh straight loss by a score of 83-66. The defeat placed j Western solidly in the ceUar of the Carolinas Conference with al-9 record. The Cats are now 5-14 overaU. With the loss, WCU is also eliminated from CC tournament play. The Catamounts jumped out to an early lead of six points, only to see it dwindle to a 25-25 tie with 4:27 to go in the half. The Bears then took over with 3:28 remaining on a jumper by L-R forward Dan Daugherty. The Cats came back to tie the game with only 38 seconds left, then went ahead on a Greg Robison jumper to command a 34-32 half-time lead. The Bears had six men in double figures, led by 6'6" forward Bill Davis with 23 points. L-R forward John Davidson dropped in 17 for the winning cause. Western Carolina was led by Gene McConneU with 22 points and Greg Robison with 14 points. Catamount captain Greg Witt man was held to only 12 points, over 8 points under his average. Both teams shot poorly from the floor, with WCU holding a 40.8 to 40.4 per centage edge. The game winning difference came, however, on Lenoir= Rhyne's phenomenal 86.4 per cent from the free throw line, garnering them 37 points. The second half was all L-R and the referees as the Bears outscored Western 51-32, 29 from the free-throw line and 22 from the field. WCU held its half-time lead for a little over six minutes, then fell behind on a tip by Davis, making the score 43-32 Bears. Olson hit a jumper for L-R, then the Bears collected 15 of their next 19 points from the foul line. The third-place CC Bears then combined with foul shots and jumpers to build a 17 point lead over the foul-plagued Cats. WCU»s Big Hank Brinkman and Wittman both fouled out in the second half during ferocious backboard battles with the shorter Bears.
