Catamounts Go Against Strong Rhode Island Five By TOM CORBETT How about a team that's averaging 99 points a game, whipping opposition by an average of 28 points a game in posting an 11=0 record? Western Carolina coach Jim Gudger will wake up Monday morning to find the nightmare wasn't just a dream. Gudger's Catamounts play Rhode Lsland College Monday night at Reid Gymnasium. Game time is 8p.m. It will be the first time the two schools have met in basketball. Coach William Baidr's small but high-scoring five were 11- o prior to starting a three- game Southern trip this weekend. The Anchormen lead NAIA statistics with a winning margin of 28 a game. Rhode Island's Rick Wilson, a 6- foot-3 freshman is 24th in NAIA scoring with a 25- point average. Ray Huelbig, a 5-foot-ll sophomore is averaging 22.8. Rhode Island will play Livingston College on Saturday night, Western Carolina Monday and North Carolina College in Durham on Tuesday night While the Anchormen are testing Southern basketball and enjoying a milder climate Western Carolina will have just finished its annual weekend excursion to Pfeiffer and Atlantic Christian. The Cats age now 1-6 in the Carolinias Conference and 5- 10 in all games. They play Pfieffer Friday night and at Atlantic Christian on Saturday night Both teams will be looking to make the trip something og a nightmare. Atlantic Christian defeated WCU at Reid Gym by 103-90 earlier in the season. The Cats defeated Pfeiffer at home 67-61 earlier, but the Falcons are tough, having downed Appalachian, Presbyterian and Lenoir Rhyne--teams that have beaten the Catoumounts soundly. Captain Greg Whitman leads WCU in scoring with a 20.3 average. He also leads the team in rebounding with a 12.5 average. Cullowhee's Gene McConnell has averaged 17.5. McConnell a 6-foot=4 junior, averaged 12 a game his freshman and junior years. Western Carolina is averaging 80.7 a game. Moore Terrace Takes Frosh Volleyball Championship Moore Terrace downed Second Moore, in volleyball action to claim the Championship of the- American League. The Freshman league is the only one in which the championship has been established. The championship title will be up for grabs in the Fraternity and National Leagues tonight beginning at 7:00. In the National League, First and Second Reynolds North will meet Third Buchanan in what is expected to be a close match that could go either way. One of the most interesting matches will take place tonight when Faculty Team #1 faces Kappa Alpha for the Fraternity League. This faculty team is made up of Constanz, Dar- den, Davis, Felsher, Horton, McConnell, Hamilton, Spilker, and Whittle won the Fraternity League last year as well as the All-Campus Championship. Kappa Alpha has an impressive team, several players returning from last year's team, and plenty of height However, the Faculty is given a slight edge in the upcoming game due to their greater experience and enthusiasm. Graduating Seniors: Allstate is the one they call 'The Maverick." Allstate is the innovator and we look for fresh ideas and young thinking to keep us ahead of the crowd. Can you measure up? If so, see the Allstate representative at the Placement Office January 29 and January 30. In a career, too. You're in Good Hands with Allstate. Faculty And KA Battle For Volleyball Champs By KEN BALL Tonight at 7:00 Faculty team No. 1 and Kappa Alpha will face each other to determine another voUeyball championship. Both teams represent the fraternity league. The Faculty team has already won the Fraternity League Championship for the last two years and will be making a bid for their consecutive All-campus title tonight Faculty team, Darden, Davis, Felcher, Hamilton, Horton, Spilker, and Whittle were undefeated last year. They seem to be even tougher this year, having picked up added weight with the addition of Coach Ray and Charlie McConnell to the team. Kappa Alpha, always tough in intramural s, have almost the same team which played last winter. The only game KA lost this was to the Faculty for their league championship. It is expected to be a ciose, hard-played game with the Fa- cutly having a slight edge. True the Faculty is not as young as their opponents, but they have physical conditioning, more experience and more enthusiasm to their advantage.
