CAT TRACKS 0 KEN BALL «?• %% At this stage of the game it looks as though WCU is on its way to having an exceptionally good year in athletics. At this point the football team, after playing a tremendous game against Emory & Henry, has a winning record. They have an excellent change of ending their last year in the Carolinas Conference with the Conference Championship. But first they have got to get by Lenoir Rhyne this Saturday night The Bears are going to be tough and Western may be hampered by injury to some key players. However, the Cats were the underdogs against Emory & Henry and if they get by LR they will be on their way to the conference title. There seems to be no stopping Coach Heath Whittle's cross country team. They are thus far undefeated, having won five straight meets. This Saturday the Harriers will have their toughest test when they meet Appalachian. It may be a little early in the season to make any predictions concerning Coach Gud- ger's basketball team. However, in physical appearance, this is one of the best looking teams to take the court at Western in quite awhile. There are some awfully big freshmen in the gym these afternoons plus Gregg Whitman, Gene McConnell, Sam Sapp, and Paul Litz who were outstanding performers last season. ...... From Page 6 team has been without a playing field of its own for the past several years, this new field should greatly improve the baseball program. The baseball field is also nearing completion. The dugouts are completed and the playing area is down to a fine grade, fertilized, and is now seeded with grass. It will be ready when the baseball season starts next spring. The total cost of these new athletic facilities is approximately $170,000 with the rubberized asphalt track accounting for more than $20,000 of this amount One of the biggest disappointments in the athletic program this year has been Wrestling. The response of students to WCU's newest sport has been pathetic. For all most people seem to care, the wrestling program may as well not exist, At least, this has been indicated by the number of men who have gone out for wrestling. Coach Setzer and the few students who have gone out for wrestling are certainly to be commended. However, if the wrestling program is to be a success, we absolutely must have more people participate. You do not have to be 6'6" and weigh 250 lbs. to go out for wrestling. Men are desperately needed in the 123 and 127 lb. weight classes. Not that we can't use men of all sizes and weights. Some of WCU's greatest wrestlers may be wandering a- round unaware that they have any ability to become wrestlers. You never know until you try. So, go down to the gym, see Coach Setzer and give it a whirl. O.K.? Taylor ... From Page4. telephone company in his home town of Brevard, pointing out aspects which make it superior to the brand of service enjoyed by WCU. Taylor, who is presently involved in a race to retain his seat in the Statehouse, also touched on another of WCU's needs, an enlarged and improved library. Citing his admiration for WCU President Alex Pow, who, he said, is "making sure state legislatures are aqainted with the needs of WCU," Taylor asserted he is working with WCU officials, for library expansion. "A good library is one of the foremost requirements of a institution which hopes to expand its masters program," stated Taylor. Summerizing the accomplishments of his two-year term in office, Taylor noted that more of his legislation was passed than that of any other representative in Western North Carolina. ! ; SUDS-FTC?* We/come Visitor \ HAPPY HOUR \ Monday-Thursday Good for one FREE till 7=30 draft beer with purchase ^ HAVE A \ *PIZZA PARTY* of any Pizza * AT EITHER '■ 1501 PATTON AVENUE * 633 MERRIMON AVENUE \ ASHEVILLE.
