  • CAROLINIAN EDITORIALS Editor's Note: Because this editorial which ran in The Carolinian last year, is so fitting and because it expresses my sentiments exactly, I am reprinting it, C.A.W. The Last Word . . . . There is a certain sense of the futile that travels hand in hand with the innate satisfaction of attacking the local "establishment," It must be the same futility experienced by the fallen angels of Milton's "Paradise Lost" when they find they have been cast into a nether corner of hell, except that the hell in this case is created not by the God of Milton or of mankind, but by that god formed by the establishment in its own image. The establishment, in its turn, has been created by the regulating agency, here as elsewhere, to provide a facade for corruption, incompetence, inherent flaws or what have you, for if these did not exist, the establishment would be unnecessary. And since it must serve this function, provide this facade, it must assumo its masque of god-like imperturbability. It is this that the student activist faces in the course of his probing, questioning attacks, his search for an elusive truth about that and those which pretend to regulate his life. He finds himself standing in the shadow of an Easter Island statue--grim.. stonefaced, of multi-faceted stoicism and blunt lack of public commitment. To understand the lack of reaction from the establishment, one must understand its psychology, produced by the knowledge that it can never permit itself to come to grips publicly with an issue, for wrestling with a given issue at a given time may reveal too much. So it is far easier and more effective to ignore issues, to effect complacent indulgence. Such tactics place upon the attacker the appearance of Quixotic fervor; the onlooker views him as attempting to fill an oceanic void with cup and teaspoon. Further, the onlooker sympathizes, not with the activist attacker attempting to strip away the facade, but with the establishment, because the establishment has, from time to time, indulged him, meted out small favors. This it can well afford to do; such small morsels have kept the vague discontentof the uninterested, uninvolved bystander in hand, rendering the activist sterile for lack of support and permittingthe establishment to strengthen its hold upon the god-masque. This, then, is the nature of the establishment. It cannot dare permit anything to affect it, no niches can be carved in the facade. And the student who agitates, who scratches at the surface, is again like Milton's fallen angel: he acts, he swarms and scurries because these are his only resources against the vast and immovable corruptive power of the establishment-god. He must eventually find what comfort he can in disasso- ciation, in building his own city in the hell created for him by the establishment. All this due the refusal to air an issue for reasons stated. But corruption is parasitic. Those it feeds upon will weaken and die, and others after them. And the establishment will gorge itself past satiation and it will be destroyed, not from the outside but from within itself. Sic semper tyrannis. J.N.T.
