  • Thursday, May 2,1968 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 7 Tennis Team Trounces North Georgia State College Western Carolina's Track Team John Scott Wins Chimney Rock Hill Climb By BRUCE McMAHAN A sizzling performance by a host of high powered cars, led by winner John Scott, provided a day of excitement for several thousand race fans last Sunday at the Chimney Rock Hill Climb. The crowd, including several hundred WCU students, saw Scott push his potent 289 Cobra up the summit in 2:12.4 minutes, only two seconds off his record time set in 1966, to take the crown. Though plagued by a bown gasket which led to a cracked block later in the race, Scott's Cobra still had the power — enough to recover from a spin- out and overcome its hindering oil leaking problem. Tidwell proved to be the top contender by setting a time of 2:12.2 before the crash. Third overall place was won by Whit Tharin in his Formula Cats Down Mars College 6—1 By KEN BALL WCU's baseball team played one of their best games thus far this season in downing Mars Hill 6-1 at Mars Hill Tuesday. Coach Ron Blackburn said that he was highly pleased with the play of the Cats in this game, especially the defense. The Cats played this entire game without a single error. The Cat Nine grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and increased the lead by one run per inning for the rest of the game. Red Thompson went to bat first for the Cats and got on base with a single. Steve Barkley followed with another single, and Red moved to third. Bill Wofford then brought Thompson home on a sacrifice fly. The second run came when the Mars Hill pitcher threw the ball away trying to pick Barkley off on a steal. Red Thompson was top hitter for the ' Cats. Red had four hits out of four trips to bat and stole three bases. Red was followed in hits by Steve Barkley who went 3 for 5. Tim Newsom went the distance for Western in the pitching department. Coach Blackburn stated that Tim especially came through well when the pressure was on. The Cats will face Erskin today on the field at Sylva. Western beat Erskin in their first meeting this season, and if they can repeat the performance tomorrow, it will give them a 500 season. If you can, get down to Sylva and "Back the Cats." The Augusta, Ga. native was not injured, but the crash put his Formula car out of the race. By KEN BALL The tennis team romped to an easy win over North Georgia State" last week.
