  • Page 4 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Tuesday, April 9, 1968 Cats Of The Week Miller By GARY TYLER Two Cats, Roger Miller and John Booth, have been instrumental to Western Carolina's success in early season play. Miller, a hard- -throwing southpaw, has led the Catamount pitching staff with three wins, no losses; and Booth's big bat has driven in more runs than any other WCU batsman. Three completions in Mil ler's three games also show his strength on die mound. Miller, a transfer student from Penbroke State, relies mainly on his good-breaking curve ball, but also throws a streaking fast ball. "Roger's performance is no surprise," acclaimed Coach Ron Blackburn, "as I have felt all along that he was Uiis good." The coach said that Miller was "one of a very few college pitchers" who are able to adjust his "stuff" during a game. "In the Elon game played on the Sylva-Webster field which has very short fences, Roger allowed four runs, including a homer in the first inning," Blackburn said, "but he adjusted his stuff and allowed only one hit, a single, for the rest of the game." John Booth, big first baseman for the Cats, has been the big gun on the Western offense. A left-handed hitter, Booth has been a long ball hitter, but can be counted on for a timely hit with runners on base. De/fa Sig, KA (jriumpfi Delta Sig smashed TKE, 16-3, in Monday afternoon intramural Softball action. Kappa Alpha crushed Sigma Tau Sigma, 26-2, in the only other intramural game. The Delta Sigs used balanced hitting to power over the TKEs in five innings, the win advancing them to the Fraternity League final to be played against KA at a later date. Kappa Alpha's scoring just couldn't be stopped by Sigma Tau Sigma's weak defense in the afternoon's other game. This game also ended after five innings of play, as Jan Gunther and Don Nichols each placed four hits to lead the KA offense. Booth "John is certainly not a flashy player, even appearing clumsy at times, but when he swings his big bat, you forget any ideas of un- coordination," the coach stated. Blackburn added that Booth's swing is smooth and that he makes good contact with the ball. "John is consistent in that he has no good games, then bad games, because he can be depended on for at least one hit per game—usually when we need it," said the coach. The clean-up batter came to WCU as an outfielder from a Winston-Salem high school, but due to lack of speed was moved to first base. Track Team Loses Tri-Meet Western Carolina lost to Campbell College and Mars Hill College in a closely contested track meet last night at Mars Hill. Final scores for the meet placed Campbell in first place with 66 points, followed by Mars Hill with 60 points.and WCU with 55 points. Although Western Carolina captured more first wins, 7-6= 4, lack of depth in placing in second and third places was the defeating factor. Mike Selley was a double-winner for Western as he streaked to win in both 100 yard and 200 yard runs. Hayes Powell, also a double- winning Cat, won the long jump and the triple jump, setting a new school record in the latter event with a jump of 43 feet 10 and 1/4 inches. Ken Parker set a new school record while winning the pole vault event, soaring to a height of 11 and 1/2 feet, The school record for the mile was shattered by Jack Hansel with a fine timing of 4 minutes, 44 seconds. The 440 relay school record fell to a team composed of Doug Simms, Hayes Powell, Roger Stephens, and Mike Selley. Their time was 44.7 seconds. Carson Elder took one half second off his old school record for the 120 yard high hurdles as he sped over the distance in 16.2 seconds, and Jack Hansel broke the old WCU two mile run record with a time of 10 minutes, 47 seconds. Western compiled a total of 35 first place points, but only 20 points for second, third, and fourth places. The Cats journey to the David son Relays on April 20 for their next meet.
