  • Organizations and Events Registration Begins Registration for WCU's off-campus credit courses begins today in Spindale and the week of September 8th in Charlotte. In Spindale, Methods of Research (EDCI 602) will be taught on Thursdays from 4-7 p.m., Aug. 28-Dec.l, at Isothermal Community College by Dr. James Wilson, superintendent of Burke County Schools. A fee of $118.50 will be charged. In Charlotte, Advanced Seminar in Elementary School Curriculum (EDEL 701) will be offered at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' Staff Development Center. The class will meet on Tuesdays, Sept. 9-Dec. 9, from 4-7 p.m. Dr. Charles Thomas Pickering, Professor and Head of the Department of Elementary Education at WCU, will teach. Fees will be $127.50. Phonics and Word Analysis (EDRD 520) will be taught in Charlotte at the Staff Development Center on Thursdays, Sept. 11- Dec. 11, from 4-7 p.m. by Dr. Richard Craddock, Professor of Elementary Education at WCU. Fees will be $127.50. Class fees are based on a minimum of 20 students. If fewer than 20 enroll, the fee will be adjusted according to the number of students present at registration. Auditions To Be Held Auditions for "Moon for the Misbegotten" by Eugene O'Neill will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. in the Western Carolina University Little Theatre located in Stillwell Building. The play has parts for four males and one female. Scripts are available in Room 122 of Hoey Auditorium. Auditions are open to the community. Production dates for "Moon for the Misbegotten" are Oct. 20-25. Choral Performances Performances with the Asheville Symphony Orchestra, at the Biltmore House, and before high school and church audiences throughout the region are among the varied choral activities announced for the upcoming academic year by Dr. Robert A Holquist, Western Carolina University director of choral activities. Dr. Holquist said that membership in the University Chorus is open to anyone without audition. The chorus meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 until 1:50 p.m. "The University Chorus performs a wide variety of works in an effort to satisfy the musical tastes of its diverse membership," Holquist said. "Very little outside preparation is required to participate." Both the choir, which meets every weekday except Friday from 11 until 11:50 a.m., and the Early Music Ensemble, which meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 until 3:50 p.m., are auditioned ensembles, according to Holquist. Auditions for the groups are held during the first week of classes and are open to all students, regardless of academic pursuit. Inquiries about the WCU choral groups should be made to Dr. Holquist, Room 446, WCU Music-English Building. Baptist Union Invite EVERYONE is invited for a night of food, fun and friends and a chance to see what the Baptist Student Union is all about. Tonight, Aug. 28th 5:30 p.m. at the the Baptist Student Center located at WCU's entrance, first building to the right just past Hardee's. Open House The University Players of WCU will hold an open house at 8:00 on Thursday evening, September 4. in Hoey Auditorium. A program of entertainment will be presented on the stage. Reading Sessions Western Carolina University's Reading Center will conduct a reading program on campus beginning Sept. 9 for persons who have reading problems or who wish to improve reading skills. The program, for individuals ranging in age from second-grade through adulthood, will run through early December. Sessions are held on Tuesdays from 4:15 until 5:45 p.m. in Killian Building. Frat's Open House The social fraternities of Western Carolina University are holding an open house on the 3rd floor of the University Center tonight from 5:00 until 7:00. We would like to invite all interested males to attend so they can establish a better understanding of the Greek System here at Western Carolina University. The fraternities at WCU have a lot to offer that many people do not realize. Come to the UC tonight after dinner and see what we are all about. Refreshments will be served. Women Tryouts Tryouts for the Western Carolina University women's basketball team will be held September 2 at Reid Gymnasium from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. All interested females are invited to participate. Foreign Film Classics A great foreign film will be shown Wednesday, in Hoey Auditorium, at 8:00. The Burmese Harp won awards at the 1956 Venice Film Festival. It is a strongly anti-war film; the story of a private who viewing the horrible aftermath of war, becomes a Buddhist and refuses repatriation at the war's end. A haunting and exquisitely photographed film, it is lyrical in part, and unforgettable in its view of battlefield wastelands. This is the first of' a series of classic films to be offered by Last Minute Productions.
