  • Page 4 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Tuesday, January 9, l%8 Cats Down Atlantic Christian 117—77; Face High Point There Tonight WCU Karate Academy Returns With Awards By DON LUCAS Western Carolina University put its scoring machine in high gear here Saturday night and walloped Atlantic Christian, 117-77. Led by All-American Henry Logan, who bucketed 43 points, the Cats broke away to a 54-36 halftime advantage and coasted from there. Logan started slow, but put on a scoring spree midway through the first half to finish with 16. In the second half, the six-foot senior dazzled the fans with almost every shot in the book, and virtually buried Atlantic Christian with his shoot ing and passing. He also added 10 assists. Atlantic Christian never threatened after pulling within six points at 24- 18 with 9:43 left in the first half. Bob Thompson, a six foot five-inch senior, played an out standing game for Western, grabbing 29 rebounds, and add ing 14 points. The Cats used their balanced scoring again, with all five starters tallying in double fig. ures. Gene McConnell with 19, Gregg Wittman with 18 and Sam Sapps 15 poised too much of a problem for the Bulldogs. The 29 rebounds that Thorn p. son hauled down broke the individual game record for the Catamounts, previously held by teammate Wittman. Wittman had 26 against Presbyterian in the Catamounts' 1966 67 open er, also played at Reid G.vm nasium. Carraway, Clyde Stall Smith and Larry Jones led the visit ing Bulldogs with 17, 16 and 15 points respectively. Logan continued to feast on Atlantic Christian, in the scoring department. A year ago in Reid gymnasium Logan riddled the Bulldogs' defense for 62 points to set a Catamount and Carolinas Conference single scoring mark. Now 8-3 for the season and 3-1 in CC competition, the Cats travel to High Point Tuesday and Appalachian State Thurs- day for CC games. Saturday night Western will host the Newberry Indians in another conference contest.
