Composed about 1723, it was first performed at the Thomaskirke in Germany in that year at an evening service on Christmas Day with full orchestra and organ accompaniment as will be done at Western Carolina. This is a cantata type composition divided into sections which include a chorus, arias, duet and a trio. Bach has taken each phrase of Mary's songand interpreted it through music. The WCU orchestra will use the same type of D trumpet used in Bach's own day. One will be played by Pressley. The other two used in the orchestra have been loaned to WCU by Brevard and Mars Hill colleges. Charlie Sutton, vice president of the student body was appointed North Carolina regional state chairman at the Associated Student Govern- ments convention held in San Francisco, Calif., Nov, 22-26. Other Delegates from WCU attending the convention were Roger Euliss, Student Body President; Judy Love, Senate Ways and Means Chairman, and Cindy Edwards, president of Women's House Government. Approximately 400 student government leaders and deans from 150 colleges representing 40 states attended the conference which began Wednesday at the St. Frances Hotel. The conference was composed of seminars, lectures and noted conference speakers working toward the goal of communicating new ideas among college leaders. "It was very rewarding to have the opportunity to meet student leaders from other colleges and universities. The ASG is unique in that it is an organization whose purpose is to aid student governments throughout the United States by serving as an information center for alleviating student government problems," vice president Sutton stated. "We plan to work very closely with other member schools in our district. My job as state regional chairman is to recruit non-member schools by publicizing the activities and advantages of membership in ASG. "I was very proud of our university and North Carolina in that we had better representation than the majority of other states." ASG is a non political association whose sole purpose is to promote the sharing of ideas about student government. To carry out this goal a national conference is held every year, a student government reference manual is circulated among student governments across the CHARLES B. SUTTON nation, a monthly newsletter to members presents items of interest for student government leaders, and regional conferences allow schools which cannot "attend the national conference to keep abreast of ASG happenings. In addition to the regular conference a symposium on the use of drugs on college campuses highlighted the convention. A panel of physicians, pharmacists, lawyers, psychiatrists and psychologists presented an objective analysis of drug use. Discussions on marijuana, LSD and other drugs were heard. Sixteen Page Christmas Edition Scheduled The Carolinian Christmas edition is coming! Sixteen pages of news, special features and sports. A special feature on the holiday tournament will highlight the sports section. A picture story of the IFC smoker will brighten the feature page as well as pictures of the WCU laundry's newest in "fashion" for the coming season, Freeman D. Jones has designed a special page for our readers and sidekick cartoonist Larry C. B. Whitesides will provide a host of campus cartoons. Columns will abound with The Cat's Paw "II" making its first meow. A special section on student rights will give each student a copy of the student bill of rights for ready reference. It's all coming in the 1967 Christmas edition of the Carolinian. Faculty Concert Set Tonight The Converse Trio of Spartanburg, S. C, will be presented in concert by the Western Carolina University Faculty Club here at 8 p.m. Dec. 6 in Hoey Auditorium. The program will be the first in a series of concerts to be presented by the club during the 1967-68 season.
