  • Page 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, November 10, 1966 CAROLINIAN SPORTS SECTION Cats Of The Week JIM WILLIAMS LEROY HOLDEN Jim Williams and Leroy Holden have been named the outstanding back and lineman of the week in Western's 62-0 victory over the Mars Hill Lions last Saturday afternoon. This is Williams' second appearance for the honor and Holden's first, Williams, a 6-0, 185 Senior from Franklin, N.C. and a Little All-American candidate played only the first half and five plays of the second last week but was still able to connect on 13 out of 19 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns. This is his second year as field general for the Cats and is the main reason for the Cat's 215.3 yard average in the air. He lacks only 59 yards coming into Saturday's Newberry game of breaking the Carolinas Conference total offense record of 1715 yards. He already holds the conference record for total passing yardage. Leroy Holden, a 6-1,185 Senior from Charlotte, N.C. caught five passes for 95 yards, one a 45 yard touchdown pass from Williams, and ran his totals to four touchdowns and 28 receptions for 495 yards. He also saw limited action in the game Saturday but was a sparkling receiver while on the field. He is the Cat's third leading pass receiver and has been a standout for the past two years for the Catamounts. Robinson Named MVP In American Frank RoMnsn.l has become the first player to win the coveted Mo«; Valuable Player A- ward in both the American and NatiDnal leagues. Robinson was named M7P in the American League Tuesday oyauin.iimous vote of the 20 voting members of the Baseball Writer's Association of America. Robinson also won the triple crown of home runs batted in and batting average in the American. He is the first to do it since Mickey Mantle in 1956. Robinson had previously been named MVP in the National League when he was an outfielder "n" the Cincinnati Reds in 1961. Robinson had led his Baltimore Orioles in their clean sweep of the Los AngV.'S Dodgers in this pasl World Series by providing Baltimore's first two runs of the game of the series. The other top vote getting players in the American league were both Baltimoreboys.Boog Powell ltid BroAs Robinson. Robinson was ar: mired from the Reds last December in a trade and made hi* Amerijai league debut by batting with a .316 average, hitting 49 home runs, and batting in 122. After the last two games, the answer seems to be yes, but this week the question will be put to another test. The Catamounts travel to Newberry, S.C, to play Newberry College this Saturday afternoon. Newberry thus far has compiled a 4-3-1 overall record and is 3-1-1 in the conference, second only to Lenoir Rhyne who remains one half game in first place. The Catamounts who presently stand 2- 3-0 and 4-4-0 overall have to win the remainder of their games to have a winning season, Running is the success vord for the Newberry Indiana. The Indians are quarterbacked by Benji Kirkland and the running attack is placed mainly in the hands of George Taylor and Neil Dufford, both halfbacks. Thus far this season, they have averaged 191.3 yards rushing per game. In last week's victory over Elon, Taylor scored two of the Indians four touchdowns. There may be a sour note in the Cats lineup this week. Chuck scott spraLied his ankle in the first half of last week's game and did not dress out for the second half. If he is not able to play this week John Tinker will be moved from defensive end to wing back. Jim Williams has an excellent chance of being the first Carolinas Conference football player to accumulate 2000 yards rushing for a single season. He has already gained 1656 yards and he has two more games to go. Williams is only 59 yards short of breaking the total offense record for the Carolinas Conference. The record is 1715 yards and was set by John Scott of Catawba. Chuck Scott, Leroy Holden and Roger Cox have all broken the school record for pass receiving set by Cox last year. Cox has 546 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 31 receptions. Scott downs, and 31 receptions. Holden has 495 yards, 4touchdowns and 28 receptions. Scott has 478 yards, 1 touchdown, and is the Cats' leading receiver with 38 receptions. Western is averaging 108 yards on the ground and 215.3 yards in the air. David Lomax is the leading rusher with 355 total yards and an average of 4.5 yards a carry. On defense Larry Duncan has intercepted four passes and Don Powers and John Tinker have recovered two and four fumbles respectively. The expressions on the trainer's face are a show within themselves—the constant gritting of teeth until blood gushes out, the slamming shut of the eyes, and the sweat pouring down the face. Several times he puts on a performance of his own as he jumps up, stamps the floor, and begins tugging out his hair. A spectator does not have to worry though as all of this circus is enclosed in a glass window. All he has to do is stand back and laugh.
