  • Page 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN November 3, 1966 CAROLINIAN SPORTS SECTION Cats Invade Mars In Saturday Contest Cats Of The Week By Doug Howard The Cats have started the ball rolling in an attempt to end the season successfully. Last week the Western footballers showed the fans the style that was predicted at the first of the season. With the return of David Lomax to the lineup, the Catamounts have a more balanced attack. Last week they gained 190 yards in the air and 190 on the ground. For the remainder of the season each completed pass by Jim Williams, Western's stellar quarterback, will increase the conference passing record. Roger Cox and Chuck Scott have broken the old Western Carolina completion record. Cox has caught 29 passes for 486 yards, and Scott has caught 35 for a total yardage of 429. Leroy Holden is not far behind with 23 catches for 400 yards The old school mark Is 2'3 1 THE CAT'S PAW 1 DAVID LOMAX David Lomax and John Barker have been selected by the Cats as this week's back and lineman of the week for their performance in the 34-0 Catamount victory over Elon College last Saturday night. Lomax, who has seen action in only four Western games so far this season, returns for this award for the third time. He is a 5-10, 186 lb. sophomore fullback from Thomasville, N. C, and has been the only real running threat the Cats have enjoyed this season. Last Saturday night he carried the ball 29 times for 12i yards, the mo3t yardage by a single back since 1962. He was the work horse of an effective running attack that rolled up 190 yards and balanced JOHN 3&IIK5R out an equal effort of 190 yards through the air lanes for the Robinsonmen. John Barker, a 5-10, 191 lb. junior from PlantCity, Florida, was selected lineman of the week for his tremendous blocking display in Western's offensive line, opening holes for the backs all night long. Barker has been a regular starter for Western all season and has played in all the Catamount games thus far. This is the first time he has received the Lineman of the Week award this season, but he has played consistently good ball all along. The people of this school have the least pride of any group of college people I've ever had the misopportun- ity to be associated with. And that is stating it mildly. Nobody forced any of the 3,000 plus students to frequent these hollowed acres. Now that is just the point, only you the students can do anything about the situation and or situations that bug you. Either generally or personally. I listen to you gripe and c >mplnin, but when you are given the opportunity to do something about what you don't like you blow the chance. Then the very next day you complain about the same things that you were given the chance to alleviate. So come on youse guys out there, get with it if you don't like something do something about it. We don't have very much tradition here at Western,I'll admit that. You know why, Because you the students won't let any be set. Why should the administration or anybody else for that matter give us something to do when we won't support it. Let the gate down people it's Friday I'm going home to mommy. For four years now I've watched weekend plans for the stu- by THE PAW $ dent body fall through time and time again for lack of support., If you don't believe me did you see the student crowd at the gam e Saturday night?I overheard a faculty member say sarcastically, "what spirit," when the cheerleaders struck up a yell. Is this the kind of pride you people have? I don't think so, nett time there are weekend functions planned, al end and watch for it every weekend, if yoii the student, body will support it. Food for thought: "Last week was Greek week? You can't prove it by me." "I didn't want, to say this, but this parking situation is ridiculous." "More interest and organization in class meeting." (But at 8:00 in the morning,) "What gixjd is grievance day, when you the student 3 won't take the opportunity.," "Are the day students fairly representated in student government." "Do non-Greeks really care when they say the Greek run campus politics." The Paw's Platitude: "Apathy has cut down many a good soul." I was very proud of the way the Cat's finally unleashed their potential last Saturday night, but, it hurts to think they've been capable of the same all year. passes for an accumulation of 413 yards. Mars Hill has been plagued with injuries all year, including star rusher and co-captain Bill Dyar. There is some question whether or not he will be able whether or not he will be in top form this Saturday afternoon. Last week the Lions used every man on their team but could not stop Georgetown. This week's game will be Mars Hill's Homecoming, and if the Catamounts play the type of ball expected of them it should be a less than happy occasion for the Lions. The Cats could be considered a "Mtu-jhteam"--co.minginlike a lamb ruid going out like a lion. Al! current predictions favor the Cats by four touchdowns, but it is hard to forget Catawba. Intramurals Feature Field Hockey On Monday, October 31, the Merry-Leg-Its of Helder Dormitory scored a 2-0 field nockey victory over the Helder Hellions. Scoring the points for the Merry-Leg-Its was Sandy Lick- tenberger, the outstanding player of the game. Due to illness, the victorious Merry-Leg-Its mustered only ten players to oppose the eleven Hellions. The match, an Important semi-final victory, will pit the winning team against a to-be-decided opponent for the field hockey championship on Monday, November 7. In previous games this season the Merry-Leg-Its have defeated the Leatherwood Leathernecks in an overtime yardage coverage and Benton Dorm by default. Coaching -ind ma-aging the MLf's to victory is handled by Shiela Duv.ill; the team's captain is 3b'<-ley Lemrnond, The Hellions are coached by Judy Nichols and Kelly Nanes, managed by Judy Penland, with Leta Davis as captain.
