  • Page 4 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, October 20,1966 CAROLINIAN SPORTS Section Intramural Program Is *»: Big Business' At WCC by Lamar Buchanan The enthusiastic roar which booms from behind Reid Gym on weekday afternoons is just an easy, relaxing game of Men's Intramural football. Intramural football here In the Valley is anything but easy and relaxing. The nine American League, nine National League, and seven Fraternity League teams put almost as much effort and enthusiasm into their games as any team anywhere. They have scheduled practices and ladder tournament elimination games. There are eighteen games in the National League, sixteen in the American League, andtwelvein the Fraternity League. The teams and their managers are National League; 1st Buchanan, Pete Shelton; 2nd Buchanan, Larry Secrest; 3rd Buchanan, Colon Balance; 1st and 2nd Reynolds North, Ken Lanning; 1st and 2nd Reynolds South, Eddie Dixon; 3rd Reynolds North, Gerald West; 3rd Reynolds South, Bill Hondros; 1st and lind Madison Craig Fogleman; 3rd and 4th Mad:son, Harold Baldwin; American League, 3rd Moore North, Keith Holtzclaw, 3rd Moore South, James Fowler, 2nd Moore North, Ed Thompson; 2nd Moore South, Tommy Canipe; Moore Terrace, Woody Davis; 1st Mo'v;, Mike Dawson, 3rd Robertson, Delbert Horn, 1st and 2nd Robertson, John Gamble; Freshmen Day Students, Gus Cattros; Fraternity League: Delta Sigma Phi, Barry Mauney; Kappa Alpha, Phil Woodruff; Pi Kappa Alpha, Mac McCaslin; Pi Kappa Phi, Tom Radford; Alpha Phi Omega, David Campbl David Campbell; Tau Kappa Epsilon, Buzz Cashion; Theta Xi, Done Bateman. There are three teams that have a 2-0 record as the paper goes to press; 3rd Reynolds South, Kappa Alpha, and Theta Xi. Notices are placed on dormi tory and Day Student bulletin boards stating the date and time of games. All students are represented in these games, so go out and support your team. Monday, Oct. 10 4:00 3rd Moore North won by a forfeit over 3rd Moore South. By reason of this forfeit 3rd Moore South is eliminated from Tag Football Competition. 5:00 3rd Robertson, scoring all nine points In the first half, defeated Moore Terrace by a score of 9-0. 3rd Robertson's only touchdown came on a three pass from Home to Shoemaker. Tuesday, Oct. 11. 4:00 1st and 2nd Reynolds North completely outclassed 3rd Reynolds North in their 53-0 contest. Berry, Henry, Dyer, and Emerson led the winners attack. 5:00 The passing of Wilson and the defensive play of Hunter gave 1st and 2nd Midi son a 26-0 victory over 3rd Buchanan. Hunter accounted for three Safeties. Wednesday, Oct. 12. 4:00 Pi Kappa Alpha, coming from behind, defeated Alpha Phi <>- mega by a score of 19-7. Dark scored A.P.O.'s onlytouchdown on a pass interception which covered yards, Adcock to McCaslin to Shaw worked for two touchdowns while a sixty yard pass from McKee to Byrd tallied PiKa's other score. 5:00 Pi Kappa Phi, Pulling an upset, defeated Tau Kappa Epsilon by a score of 8-6. The Pi Kaps, scoring their eight points in the first half, managed to hold off a determined TKE bid late in the game lo win. Hayworth tallied for the winners while McAuliffe scored for the losers. Thursday, Oct 13. 4:00 2nd Moore North, losing until the final minutes of play, defeated 1st Moore by a score of 7-6 . Lathan scored for the losers while Hager scored for the winners. 5:00 The freshmen Day Students defeated 1st and 2nd Robertson by the margin of a first quarter safety, 8-6. The Bears, who were rated number two In the nation by the NA1 two in the nation by the NAIA last week, lost their first game of the year last Saturday night against Guilford, 21-20. The score was not the only sore spot for L-R this week, as the Bears lost their leading rusher, Wayne Bell. Bell was injured on the second play of the game against Guildord, and did not play the rest of the game. He is a doubtful starter against the Cats. Lenoir -Rhyne runs its traditional single wing, with quarterback Sam Holcomb calling the plays. Mike Campbell is another leading runner for the Bears. Western is back to full strength with David Lomax and Ellis Johnson back in the Catamount backfield. Lomax gained 90 yards on the ground against Emory & Henry. JIM Williams ' passing will be another factor in Saturday' game. VII' W POINT from page 3 ever, to destroy the One Ring when the Dark Lord discovers that the Hobbits possess it. So begins the trilogy, and from this point and the author's imagination carries the reader into a most fantast- Lomax And Stanley Named Outstanding David Lomax and Bill Stanley have been chosen the Western Carolina Catamounts back and lineman of the week for their outstanding play against Emory & Henry in the annual Homecoming game. Lomax, a 5-10, 186 lb. fullback from Thomasville, has the distinction of being the only Cat to be named for this twice thi s season. What makes thi s a tremendous feat is the fact that he has only played in two games this year be cause of injuries. Last week he rolled up 90 yards on the ground in 13 carries In his first appearance since the opening game against carson- Newman, Bill Stanley, from Roanoke Rapids, is a 6-2, 215 lb. tackle who so far thi s year has played both offensively and defensively for Coach Dan Robinson. Being one of the few Cats to go both ways this year, Stanley has been a stalwart in the Wostarn llnp. DAVID LOMAX BILL STANLEY ic and delightful adventure. It has , become the subject of much debate, and societies, such as the "Baggins Society for Hobbit Lovers," have been formed. Critics have to argue as to whether the trilogy will last or MEAD CORPORATION Sylva Division whether it will become simply ■another trilogy." If you want to get in one the debate read THE HOBBIT and then start on the trilogy; THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE R NG, THE TWO TOWERS, and finally THE RETURN OF THE KING. This work may not be "your cup of tea" but I promise you some adventurous and highly imaginative reading.
