  • Homecoming Edition, 1966 Last Week's Conference Action Lenoir-Rhyne moved even more securely into first place in the Carolinas Conference Saturday by defeating Appalachian 28-7 Saturday night. Mik3 Cambel!, L-R wingback, scored on thirty and three-yard runs as the Bears moved to 3 - 0 in the conference and 4-0 overall. Newberry went outside the conference and defeated Frederick 33-0. Quarterback Benji Kirkland and halfback George Taylor scored two touchdowns apiece. Presbyterian broke a two- game losing streak as they defeated cellar-dwelling Elon 21-6. This was the Blue Hose's first conference win. Guilford dropped their second straight, 20-7, to Samford College in Birmingham, Alabama It was the WCC Cats' great pleasure to hand Guilford the first of this string. Three of the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears' backs scored in Saturday's win over Appalachian, Catawba's Scott smashed two Carolinas Conference passing records in the Indians' victory over Western. He hit on 34 out of 56; both figures are records. Cunningham Looks Toward New Building J. Floyd Cunningham, who has been head of our business department for three years, maintains that he and his entire staff are "looking forward to the new business building. Since 25% of our students are business majors, the expanding college enrollment has made this building a necessity. Facilities are now grossly inade- "quate.* This new extension, hoped to be contracted this fall, will relieve congestion in Stillwell as classrooms on ground floor will no longer be used. Stillwell will be a science building. Three-storied, the new structure will house computers and business placements. "It will have," Dr. Cunningham states, "a rather unique design, and there will be nothing on campus quite like it* It is designed for optimum effeciency and has a rectangular hallway which will alleviate massive delay as in Stillwell. No student will have to travel more than half a hallway for a staircase. It will be wired for closed circuit TV which Cunningham feels will induce "better staff utilization." Although this will cut down on close teacher-student relationships it will put a demand on better instruction. There will be an assembly room but most notably there will be forced air circulation. "We feel,", asserted Cunningham, "that this new building will create a much better academic environment," DOUG REKD, from page 4 In this capacity he covered the State Legislature for five sessions before the Raleigh Bureau of the Asheville paper was opened. From City Editor to Managing Editor he was in charge of both the ASHEVILLE CITIZEN and the CITIZEN-TIMES Sunday edition. As Associate Editor for all editions he opened the Raleigh News Bureau in December, 1964 and served as Bureau Chief there until his appointment here, this fall. The later game saw Theta X! score 25 points in the first half to coast to a 32-7 win over Pi Kappa Phi. RIDGEWAY INN Announces Buffet Suppers And Dancing Each Friday Evening SUPPER FROM 7:00 DANCING FROM 9:00 MUSIC BY ROBERT TREVARTIIEW AND HIS THREE KEYS $4.00 PER COUPI E Saturday will be the day when former students return to see if we are filling their old seats with as much frequency and enthusiasm as they once did as Western takes on a very well balanced Emory & Henry football team in Homecoming's feature attraction Saturday night in Memorial Stadium., The appearance of Emory & Henry in the Valley will renew an old rivalry. A conflict in scheduling has prevented competition between the two teams in the past few years. This year's 3-1 record for Emory & Henry presents a tough picture for Saturday nights game. Coach Tom Young said that I* & 11 is, "the best team we will meet with the possible exception of Lenoir Rhyne." Emory & Henry is considered by many to be the best small college team in Virginia and maybe in the district as well. They are an independent team and do not have to play a conference schedule. This enables them to pick their opponents. This also enables them to recruit under any tactics they wish, Two weeks ago, Emory & Henry defeated Catawba by the score of 46 to 0 and last Sat urday afternoon the Cats lost their battle to Catawba by the score of 24-7. Don't be so glum Ihough--Catawba had seven starters out for the E & H game. Also an interesting fact is that Emory & Henry lost their opener, their only loss, to Carson-Newman, a team the Cats had very good success against. The Catamounts will bcgniig against one of the largest teams on their schedule. Reports are that Emory & Henry's backfield is as big as their line and their line is as fast as their backfield. They have an offense that performs with machine like precision. Running out of winged "T" with a Straight T to com pliment it they should prove to be a power team with the boys to back up the strategy. Starting at quarterback is 6-3, 200 lb. Sonny Wade, Wade can throw the ball and is an exceptional runner. TimSarver is at right halfback. He only weighs 155 but was the most sought after football player in the state of Virginia. Bobby Bates is at the other halfback spot. He scored two touchdowns against Catawba two weeks ago. Emory & Henry's three wins have come from Elon, Catawba, and Mc.ryvllle, Tenn. Wester i has only faced one of these teams so far this season but has to face Elon later this season in a conference game. Western can add another win to their 2-2 record by displaying the great defensive and pas? sing form that is usually typical when the Cats play in front of the homo fans. The team Is in good spirits despite their loss of last week and are expected to play in front of a ■ell-out crowd Saturday night, in a real test of the Cats defense. Curfew Hours Stated Here Curfew hours for women stu- dants for Homecoming and future away football games have been announced by Dean of Women, Mrs. Peggy Ziegler. Friday, the night before Homecoming, closing hours in the dormitories will be midnight. Saturday morning those women working on displays will be allowed to leave the dormitories at 4 o'clock. Curfew for Saturday night is 12:30. Away games with Catawba, Mars Hill, Newberry, and Presbyterian being afternoon games, women will be expected to return to campus by customary dormitory closing hour. „ The Lenoir-Rhyne game will be at Hickory at 8:00 P.M. Women will have a 1:00 A.M. permission. (This maybe changed as it was being deliberated at the time of printing—Ed.)
