They'd better be damn good. Be good, Cats, Be good. The Cats can lose, too. Look at the Cats lose. Lose, Cats, lose. Damn, Cats. Catawba's John Scott Guns Down' Cats, 24-7 Western Carolina was all but eliminated from the Carolinas Conference race Saturdiy as the Catawba Indians combined a five man line and a double teaming pass defense to bring the cats to a disappointing 24-7 defeat. Catawba opened up with a shotgun offense which voided the previously effective Catamount rush. They drove early in the first quarter and took over a 7-0 lead. The cats returned with a pass interception by Don Powers on the 50 which he returnee to the Catawba 37. Jimmy Williams hit Chuck Scott with twi passes, then Larry Whitesidi carried to the 1-yard line. Williams came back with Whiteside on the next play and score was 7-7, with Ed Roddey kicking the extra point. The second period was scoreless with Petters of Catawba missing on two field goal at- temps. The second half was a completely different story, Catawba struck for 10 points in tin- third quarter on a field goal by Petters and a 6 yard run by Scott. Scott scored again in the fourth quarter on a five yard rjn an<l Catawba was able 10 maintain this lead to win their homecoming game by a very convincing margin. Indian's quarterback Scott shattered William's passing record by hitting 34 out of 56 for 338 yards. The Catawba ground g:ime was almost as inefficient as the Western attempt as it accounted for only 55 yards. Catamount coach Dan Robinson was "highly disappointed," and rightly sofor the Catamount running game faltered under a 5-man "ush by the Catawba front line. It would be wise to note that P.I). Walden, Cat defensive mainstay, was missing from the defensive backfield, the spot that hurt the Cat's so badly throughout the game. He suffered side and back injuries that were discovered only shortly before gametime. Larry Duncan, who missed action in the Guilford game, was another defensive dependable who missed a great deal of the Catawba game because of injuries. Ail in all, it turned out that a lot of Western fans traveled a relatively long distance, sat under a hot piedmont sun, cheered against a very enthusiastic Catawba homecoming crowd; Carroll Sheppard even cut her ey> all to no apparent avail. SPORTS SIDELIGHTS The 55th Annual North Carolina Invitation Senior Tennis Championships begins Thursday at the Biltmore Forest Country Club and will last through Sunday.
