Take any road away from the campus and one can find many new sights and experiences that are not ordinarily visited by the masses. Fo r instance.there is Clingman's Dome located in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park in Tennessee which is only about thirty five miles from Western. This is the highest point in Tennessee and from the tower, which is located on the dome, one has a spectacular view of the mountains and country that surround the area. Closer still is scenic Cherokee, North Carolina. Although the tourist season is closed one is still able to imagine the events which took place there many years ago. The Oconaluftee River which runs through the area is a trout fisherman's paradise. Only a few miles from ,iur own college campus there is another unusual place of interest, Judaculla Rock. Indian etching of unknown origin covers it, and as of yet, the etching has not been deciphered. Many find the writing quite interesting and try to decide the meaning behind the symbols and drawings. For the fisherman and out doorsman of Western, there is Bear Lake. Fishing, boating, hiking, and all types of game are to be found in the peaceful lake area. Many have already discovered how enjoyable an outing at Bear Lake, can be.. Mr. R.J. Martin, director of the intramural program, reported that total participation reached a new high last year, and he is hoping for an even greater participation this year. A total of 3314 students took par. in fifteen different phases of the intramural program last year. Tag football was the most popular Six>rt with 993 participants, followed closely by Softball and basketball with 822 and 804 respectively. In tournament play, there were numerous winners. In tag football, Delta Sigma Phi took all campus honorrs, while the Day students took the honorsin basketball and volleyball and Kappa Alpha captured the coveted award in Softball. In the individual sports, Larry McDonald was handball champ; Jim Hooks, bowling champ; Cecil Caldwell, free throw champ; Bruce Byrd, badminton; Darry Veach, table tennis; Don Blanton, billiards; Ti n Sutlhin, horseshoes; and Harold Stevens, tennis. During spring quarter, soft- ball held the limelight. Kappa Alpha was All-campus champs while 1st and 2nd Reynolds North finished in the runner-up set. Also during spring quarter, was the annual track and field meet. Last year sixty-two persons took part, with six participants taking first place honors. They were Joe Hamilton, 100 yd. dash; Eric Berg, shot put; Chuck Scott, Softball throw; Joe Love, fooioall throw; Phil Woodruff, broad jump and Jim Miller, high jump. Fall quarter will be another active quarter for intramural participants as tag football once again begins in approximately two weeks. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to take part in the intramural program here at Western.
