  • 3 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN December 3,1970 Cats open at home tonight with Eagles Rival UNC-A hosts WCU for their homecoming Sat. THE LIGHT TOUCH—6-foot-3 Catamount WUson Scott assists an unidentified Lenior-Rhyne player not make a basket in toe final round of the Turkey Classic. The Cats AND THE JUNGLE it/ jtuyU jm touell. I THE CATS ARE BACK, so toe word is out around toe fun spot of toe South—CuUowhee. Some of you who may have 1 failed to notice that toe Cats were even gone shant be too surprised. I mean I dont expect everyone to twinkle, tinkle and tata at toe news, but two losing basketball seasons have been a long dry spell. Tonight toe Catamounts open their home season against the Eagles of Carson-Newman College and they won't be starting empty-handed. The 1970 Coach Jim Hartbarger edition of toe Cats are sporting a brand spanking new polished undefeated 2=0 record along with being toe Turkey Classic Champions. The Cats wUl be tough this season with more excitement for toe home fans to cull than watching saUors on a submarine try to dive with a screen door. Come on out tonight and watch toe Cats and see why the Cats are back. For this week's biggy, try eating tois one between two slices of bread.Tuesday night whUe us CuUowheegens were • calmly attending our flocks or what have you, we were smitten. Forthright and hitherto smitten. Now gents and dames who was the smiter and who was the smitee is toe question. Put your ear closer to this page and listen. This week UNC-A (toe "A" is for almost ) is hosting our own Catamounts there in AshevUle for their homecoming. Well here is where the smiting begins. To insult, aggravate and who knows why else a couple of spirited Ashe- wUle-BUtmorians attempted to steal our mascot Catamounts from their trophy case in the gym. And thus we's been smi- ted. They were of course caught and foiled, but toe intent was there. Last year the UNC-Almoster's treated WCU in a most abrasive manner when the Cats played there. They unveUed such signs as Cullowhere? and Western Carolina CoUege rat there to our faces. Oh toe fury, the pain evoked from deep within our very purple and gold souls. Perhaps the BULLdog athletic supporters dont realize that stealing our Cats wUl not help them. Besides, they are likely to get more Catamounts than they want anyway this Saturday night, Okay students now you know you have been smitten and by whom. What shall we do to gain our glory? Suggestion number 28723 is that we all descend upon this Saturday and commence to show them a thing or three. Their officials are holding 1,000 tickets for toe WCU fans and they are all together. Beauty may be truth, but spirit is a mob. Go. Now a word to all you Catamount footbaU fans who've brought out your punch cups on rumors. The answer is no. Western Carolina wUl not play in a post-season bowl game. We ail know we should, but the bowl-picker-outers counted up 29 too many points against us. Wrap them cups in newspapers and save 'em for next year. In closing—I wUl meet you at the post office at noon tomorrow. If you get there first, you take some chalk and draw an X on the sidewalk. If I get there first. I'U rub it out. The Western Carolina University Basketball Catamounts served notice on its upcoming opposition that "toe Cats are back" by winning the Burlington Civitans Turkey Classic this past weekend. Coach Jim Hartbarger's Catamounts played outstanding defense, had strong bench support and were extremely cool under pressure to defeat Atlantic Christian. 86-83, in toe semi-finals and linoir-Rhyne, 76-66, for the championship. Whether tois Catamount edl tion can restore WCU's winning basketball tradition after two successive losing campaigns wUl be determined tois week when they face two NAIA powers. Carson-Newman College of Tennessee, 28-8 last year, pays a visit to WCU's Reid Gym Thursday night for the CaU home opener. Then Saturday night, toe Cats travel to Ashe-- vUle to renew toe intense rivalry with UNC-A, Mike Manis, a 6-3 senior transfer, was voted toe Classic's MVP on toe strength of his great outside shooting and was jointed on the AU-Touroa- ment team by Paul Litz, the Cats pivot man. Litz, at 6-7, averaged 16 rebounds and 15.5 points in toe tournament. However, it was toe play of sophomores Larry "Go-Go" Grant and Tommy Roach that turned toe tide for WCU. Grant, a 6-0 pointman, came off toe bench to average 12 points and Roach, a 6-1 multi-purpose player, came up with several key baskets and steals. Both were superb in handling the ball under pressure defenses employed by ACC and Lenoir- Rhyne, Hartbarger, beginning his second season at WCU, was pleased with toe Cats defense performance and disappointed with their offense. "Much of our offensive inconsistency is caused by our unsettled lineup. We have yet to find our best five out of toe nine players we used regularly. Until this is accomplished, our offense cannot jeU," Hartbarger explained. WCU wrestling bolsters low-weight dosses for 70 Western Carolina University will be entering its third season of inter-collegiate wrestling competition this winter with toe prospects bright for an even better season than last year's 8-3 record. The Catamount grapplers suffered three defeats last year as a result of ineffectiveness in the lighter weight classes. Only one victory was salvaged in eleven 118 pound matches and even worse in toe 126 pound class where toe Cats were win- less. Russell, a sophomore, was 8-3-0 last year and Foster was an outstanding New Jersey prep wrestler. Charles Harris is toe only returnee in toe 150 pound class. He was 1-1-0 last year. Mike Mann, ineligible last season, wiU supply toe competition. The team's only senior, Steve Nelson, wUl grapple in toe 158 pound class and will be pushed by freshman John O'Hare, a district champ at East Mecklenburg High. There is a lot of competition in toe 167 pound class with sophomore Doug Barrier, 6-2-1 Ashley, Mcintosh and Williams win All-district slots Guard Tony Ashley, a repeat choice, joined taUback Otis Mcintosh and defensive tackle, Steve WUliams, as Western Carolina's members of the aU- district team, Appalachian placed three of the five repeating players from last season in end Clayton Deskins on offense and end PhU Keener and tackle Wayne Fletcher on defense, Wofford College, which wUl be playing in toe NAIA Champions Bowl for all toe marbles, dominated toe NAIA AU District 6 team, placing nine of its players on toe 22-player team. Presbyterian, which wrapped up toe Carolinas Conference championship with a Thanksgiving day victory over archrival Newberry, placed four on toe team, followed by three selections each for Appalachian Newberry and Western Cairo- Una. last year, returning and junior Ron KeUer moving up from toe 158 class where he was unbeaten (6-0 1) and had four pins. Two freshmen, Jerry Toy and Joe Hunter, are fighting it out in toe 177 class. Toy was fourth in New Jersey last year and Hunter was toe N,C. champ and brings a 49-2-1 record from Brevard High. The 190 class is strong again with Frank MUler, 7-1-0 as a freshman, and Robert Abrams. « newcomer, Abrams is WCU's first blind wrestler and won state titles In both Ohio and North Carolina. Heavyweight Ron Cobbledick returns for his third season. He was 7-3 last year and 5-0 as a freshman. He has nine pins to his credit and has never been pinned himself.
