  • Friday, May 13, 1966 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PAGE 5 'My Fair Lady1 Is Well- Received, Delightful Play By Nell W. Holtzctaw A delightful first night audience gave the cast of "My Fair Lady" a standing ovation at the conclusion of a thoroughly professional performance directed by T. C. Roberts Tuesday night. The keen enjoyment for the senses provided by the players, the stage crew, and the musicians was due to the kind of heart-felt hard work that is apparent to an audience only through the seemingly effortless ease of a truly fine production. Anthony Brown performs a real tour de force by sustaining the very demanding characterization of the egotistical professor Higgins. For the performance he was Henry Higgins! The Little Theatre at Cullowhee is indeed blessed—not cursed—with two fine actresses who are capable of bringing to life the self-effacing guttersnipe who matures into a real woman. Having viewed the last dress rehearsal and the first night performance, I, of course, compared the two actresses. As Eliza Doolittle, Miss Cooper demonstrated a higher quality of acting ability in both the Covent Garden scene and in the scene in Higgins' study after the Transylvanian Embassy Ball. On the other hand, Miss Moseley's singing voice, is after her first scene, superior to Miss Cooper's. However, these noted differences in particular skills may only be momentary, for Miss Cooper has been plagued with a recent cold and experience will bring out Miss Moseley's dramatic abilities. Both are excellent Eliza Doo- littles. Karen Blackmore's whole performance as Mrs. Higgins is finely polished. Aslo Mike Gray's Colonel Pickering is "dashedly" good. The mechanics of the scenery construction and scene shifts deserve special mention because of the astonishing rapidity of the necessary shifts. Incidentally, the only possible sour note in this general area is a possibly too- yellow Higgins' study, which also has red and green accents. The well-designed sets and beautiful costumes suggest the appropriate moods of the two classes of society involved in the musical. For instance, the stereotyped and unemotional temper of the aristocrats is conveyed by the gorgeous, period- fashion-show costumes and stylized scenery in both the Covent Sanford's FOOD TOGO GOLDEN BROWN CHICKEN OYSTERS SHRIMP SCALLOPS ONION RINGS French Fry Potatoes HUSH PUPPIES Phone "Yo" Orders 586-4096 OPEN DAILY 11:00 A.M. OPEN SUNDAY 12 NOON Int. Mill & Main Streets Gardens and Ascot scenes. On the other hand, the ingenuous and unsophisticated nature of the lower class element, which gives play real life, is suggested by the boisterous, exuberant dances—which contrast with the staid, aristocratic "Ascot Gavotte"—and is actually depicted in the person of natural, generous, unrestrained Alfred P. Doolittle, admirably performed by Jerry Conner. The dances, which make the show, are exceptionally well done by dancers who obviously enjoy what they are doing. Their enthusiasm draws the audience into the msuical, as also do the "snake" dances around the viewers during both the vigorous "Get Me to the Church on Time" and the Finale. Sandra Norris deserves special mention as a part of this chorus. First, last, and certainly not least, in representing the unob- Shown above is a portion of the Ascot scene from the Little Theatre at Cullowhee's production of "My Fair Lady." "My Fair Lady" presented by the Little Theatre at Cullowhee is "loverly" in every respect. Editor's Note: The play's five- night run, which began Tuesday evening and will continue through tomorrow night, will also feature a matinee performance for the benefit of visitors and alumni at Spring Festival tomorrow afternoon. The Little Theatre at Cullowhee's production of "My Fair Lady" has probably been more enthusiastically received than any play to date; tickets for all performances have been sold out, but last- minute availability may make seating possible. Mike Gray as Colonel Pickering and Karen Blackmore as Mrs. Higgins liven the stage in a scene from the LTC's "My Fair Lady."
