  • Western Carolinian/January 17, 1983 page 14 Cross country skiers were out with Cul/owhee's first taste of winter. Snow blanketed the area in various depths creating a winter wonder land in the mountains. This was a welcome sight to the hard pressed skiing business and ski buffs as well. With the many activities students engage in during the winter season, students should exercise caution while travelling on these treacherous mountain roads. Do not let the beauty overshadow the dangers that go hand in hand with the scenic wonder that Cullowhee offers. Although Kidnapping doesn't usually pay, members of Western Carolina University's Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity made their annual kidnap activities pay handsomely for several local charities and organizations. Members of the Lambda Chi fraternity "kidnapped" the presidents of WCU's five sororities and held them for a randsom of canned goods, toys, clothing and even a Christmas tree. Items collected were donated to the C.J. Harris Hospital Auxiliary, County Home and other agencies. With the ransom are, left to right, sorority president of Lambda Chi Alpha; Ruth Thomasson of Zeta Tau Alpha; Dawn Boone of Phi Mu; and Mary Riddle of Alpha Xi Delta.
