  • Friday, February 11, 1966 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PAGE 5 Positions Of Taylor, Smith Involve Numerous Duties by Mickey Lively The Western Carolinian has chosen to interview this week, Nick Taylor, Senator, and Sheridan Smith, Assistant to the President of the Student Body. Nick is a representative from the sophomore class and Sheridan is also a sophomore. Nick is a junior and hails from Fort Myers Beach, Florida. He is majoring in professional writing with a concentration in journalism. In addition to serving as Senator, Nick is a member of several important committees on campus. He is Chairman of the standing student government committee. It is his job to sit in on these committees in the absence of the President, Paul Cabe. Sheridan also assist the President in other ways. He spends a day in the President's office making appointments and assisting students with their problems concerning student government. Sheridan made this comment concerning his work, "This position has been one of great challenge to me in which I have realized the importance of the student body President and the student body representatives. I k 4 if, r i 1 Sheridan Smith, SBPA, and Senator Nick Taylor. Standards Committee which has as its main function the editing of the student handbook and the necessary general regulations concerning conduct on campus. The main issue confronting this committee now is the publication of the new handbook. Nick is also a member of the Constitutions Committee and the Appropriations Committee. One of his larger responsibilities is that of News Editor of the WESTERN CAROLINIAN. He is a Brother of Kappa Alpha Order and is Corresponding Secretary for the chapter. Here is what Nick has to say about his work in the Student Senate: "Working on the Senate this year has been a revelation. Very seldom before I started as a Senator did I ever stop to think about just exactly how things get done here in the first Place. I think this is the case with most people — something is done with perhaps a degree of error, and it becomes subject to immediate criticism — with no thought given to the work behind it and the smallness of the percentage of error. Under the circumstances, the Senate is forced to contend with, it is commendable that it is effective at all, let alone as excellent as it is. "I feel that the student body at Western Carolina College, as represented by the Senate, has come a long way since the present program was initiated almost two years ago." Sheridan Smith is a sopho- 'hore majoring in Political Science. In addition to his task, that of Assistant to the President of the Student Body, he serves on several committees and is a member of other extracurricular activities. These include the Debate Club, the College Center Board, the Health and Safety Committee, and the May Day Central Committee. As Assistant to the President of the Student Body, he is an ex officio member of every hope to see these positions carried out to the fullest extent in the coming years. In working with student senators, I have never seen a more dedicated group. I feel that the students of Western Carolina College should take a greater interest in their student government which is designed to represent and perpetuate their needs." This week we have seen the work and feelings of a Senator, Nick Taylor, and those of another, Sheridan Smith, Assistant to the President of the student body. We would like to congratulate them for their fine work in their respective offices. How many times have we heard this, and how many times have we believed or doubted it? There are times, no doubt, when we are inclined to question this. But there are also times when we must seriously consider it. Women like Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Kennedy and Madam Chang Kai Chek have been inspirations to their husbands. They have, in good times as well as bad stood beside their mates and offered them the inspiration that can come only from a husband-wife relationship.
