  • The Western Carolinian SPORTS April 2, 2019 AS -Catamount baseball takes on Red Storm Emma Kaye Thomas Sports Editor On Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, the Catamount Mens Base- . ball Team played a double header against the St. Johns Red Storm. With previous games being cancelled due to the severe winter weather that Cullowhee had been receiving, the team took on only two games for this series, against the Red Storm on Sunday afternoon, hoping for two wins to allow their statistics to boom in the Southern Conference. In the first game of the day, the Red Storm was able to gain two home runs against the Catamounts in the first three innings, while Emma Kaye Thomas Sports Editor On March 6, 2019, the Lady Catamount Softball Team took on the Sacred Heart Pioneers at their home opening game of the season. With many _ high hopes for the team for the season, the fans - and the players looked - forward to a close and - exciting game for the Catamounts and hope- fully a win. In the first inning, : . the Lady Catamounts were able to get one error, one hit, and one run off. Baseball vs. Indiana State Emma Kaye Thomas Sports Editor On Feb. 26, 2019, the Catamount Baseball Team went head to head with the Indiana State Sycamores. With Joe Vranesic starting the game and having no Sycamore players score, the Catamounts started with a smooth start to the begin- ning of the game. In the bottom of the first inning, which means the end of the second inning when the Catamounts were batting, number nine, Daylon Nanny started out batting, automatically walk- ing off the field after not be- ing able to hit the ball once. Right after him, number eight, Jalen Jones, a newly recruited freshman, stepped up to the plate. In his time at home base, he was able to get a few foul balls up but he also ended up not being able to run to any of the bases. Behind Jones, Justice Bigbie, number eighteen, also was not able to run any bases, leaving the score 0 to 0 at the top of the second inning. With Joe Vranesic back up to the pitching mound during the top of the second inning, the Catamounts loeked for another three Strikeouts to allow them- selves to have the oppor- tunity to score against the Sycamores. Unfortunately for the Catamounts, number nineteen on the Indiana Westerns team continued to stay scoreless. In the fourth inning though, Luke Robinson was able to get to first base, allowing the Cata- mounts to have confidence on scoring more throughout the game. Eventually, Rob- inson was able to make his way to third base, helping the Catamounts get closer to being on the scoreboard. Thanks to teammate An- drew Bullock and his single, Luke Robinson was able to make his way to homebase, making the score 2 to 1, the Catamounts only down by one point. Later in the fourth inning, Andrew Bullock was able to run to homebase, mak- ing the score two to two by lows a runner or batter to move bases. Their defense also helped them keep the Pioneers from scoring, and the Catamounts were able to lead the game 1 to 0 against the Connecticut team. With this being their home opener, the Catamounts were able to get a good amount of fans out to support and the girls themselves were very enthusiastic and ready to win their first game at home and for some of them, their first game at home ever. In the second inning, pitcher Kensey Liscio, a junior this year on the softball team, was able to keep the score 1 to 0, only allowing two State team was able to get a double while up to bat, which made the Cata- mounts fight to make sure they did not get anymore runs, to allow them to score. With the top of the second inning coming to an end, the Catamounts were able to hold off the Sycamores, only allowing one player to get to third base. During the bottom of the second inning, number seven, Luke Robinson, was able to make a single, get- ting the Catamounts on the bases early in the bottom of the second inning. Sadly, during Will Praters turn at home base, Robinson attempted to run to second base and was tagged out. By the end of the second. inning, none of the Cata- mounts were able to score and the score remained 0 to 0. By the bottom and end of the third inning, the Catamounts were losing two to zero, allowing many hits and runs when it came to the Sycamore baseball team. However in the end of the bottom, there was a pitching change. Joe Varsenic went out and number twenty two, Ty McCulloch went in, allowing the Catamounts to finally move to the top of the third inning. Kitt Capell started out the top of the third inning with not being able to score but number ten, Matthew Koehler, came the beginning of the fifth inning, running home on a single, hit by Catamount infielder Jalen Jones. In the fifth inning though, the Red Storm made a huge and very important comeback against the Catamounts. Many walks allowed the Red Storm to load the bases on the Catamounts home field, and eventually send three of St. Johns players home, making the score 5 to 2 against the Catamounts with only two more innings to spare. By the end of the first game against the Red Storm, the Catamounts lost 5 to 2 but this did not mean that the Catamounts were done fighting for the Lady Pioneers to get to first base during dif- ferent times during the bottom of the second. In the top of the second inning, the Lady Cats were not able to score, although many girls were very close to get- ting on base. In the bottom of the third inning, Liscio came back up to pitch the heat. With the help - of the infields eye and the outfields quick re- flexes, the Catamounts were able to hold the Pioneers off and not allow any one of the opposing girls to hit home plate. This allowed the score to be- come 2 to 1, the Sycamores winning. Not long behind though, number nine, Dylan Nanny, also score a home- run, tying the game 2 to 2. By the bottom of the fourth inning of the game, the Catamounts were still tied with the Sycamores 2 to 2. Will Prater, the first up to bat at the top of the fourth inning, was able to get a single on the first hit of the Catamounts line up. In the middle of the fourth inning, Prater was also able to run to third, allowing the Cata- mounts a lead and also al- lowing him to run home on a single, making the score 3 to 2. By the top of the sixth inning, the Catamounts continued to stay in the lead. By the end of the game, the Catamounts came out with a loss, losing 8 to 4 against the Sycamores. The opposing team was able to add on four extra runs in the seventh inning, allow- ing them to stay in the lead and leave the Cats a loss at home. The Catamount baseball team is still looking forward and are willing to win a multitude of games to keep them in high ranking in the Southern Conference. | win that they knew they deserved. With this game being their fifth straight loss as a team, the Cats made sure that they were going to come back swinging with everything they had. In the second game of the day, the Catamounts stepped up to the plate ready for redemption from earlier that Sunday. With the first inning being scoreless, yet again, the Catamounts were able to look ahead as they worked hard for a win. In the second inning, the Red Storm was able to score one time with one run, two hits and no errors throughout their time at plate. By the end of the second inning, the Catamounts were losing the lead 1 to 0. In the first part of the the top of the third inning, number three, Ashlyn Long was able to get a walk-off and eventu- ally during the second batters turn, was able to run to third base and prepare to run home. With a hit to right field, Long was able to run to home plate, making the score 2 to 0 against the Lady Pioneers. The score stayed this way going into the bottom of the fourth inning. In the fourth and fifth innings, the Catamounts were able to continue to hold the Lady Patriots off from scoring, keeping the score 2 to 0 at the Senior Shaina Reed batting. The third inning is where the Catamounts decided to show what they could do. Justice Bigbie, a sophomore and infield/outfield player, was able to hit a three run field home run, meaning that he was able to get three people to home plate and allowing the Catamounts to take the lead by two, 3 to 1. Due to this and the pressure and hard work the Cats put on the field, they never lost the lead after this inning. In the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, the Cata- mounts were able to score a total of two points, while the Red Storm scored a total of three points, making the score 5 to 4. The seventh end of the fifth inning. With their first win at home so close for the Catamounts, the ladies pushed in the next two innings of the game, which ended up being the only innings of the game left, so that they could secure the win for their season record. In the sixth inning, at the top of the inning, both the Catamounts and the Pioneers were able to run to home, making it a two point ball game with the Lady Catamounts win- ning 3 to one. In the matter of one inning, the Catamount team was able to score eight total points against the Red Storm, making the final score of the game thirteen to four. This was the first win for the Catamounts against the Red Storm since their 1999 season, so this win for their records meant a lot to the team and Western Carolina University.
