  • PAGE FOUR THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN February 23, 1948 ■■+ + Spotting The Sports By H. R. Griffin To Let You Know _ —.— + BASKETBALL SPOTS Bob Tate came through in the Greensboro Daily News as the "Athlete of the Week." He had a nice write up and picture of his famed one hand set shot . . . prediction: "Ace" McGinn will be having the same honor before the end of the season . . . The Catamounts ran into one more hot ball team in Appalachian. The Mountaineers hit the fantastic average of 85 per cent of their shots against our boys while we were getting 19 per cent. Thirty is considered very good . . . Everyone had their ears_ glued to the radio the other night listening to the Kentucky-Notre Dame game. Leo Barnhorst, brother of our own Howard, was one of the Dame key men, especially on rebounds like his brother. Howard's comment, "I taught him all he knows." Also in the last issue of Sports, a monthly magazine, Leo's picture appeared (beg your pardon), Helen), and it is quite easy to see who got the looks in the family . . . Why do we always run into these teams when they are leading the conference; but, then, they are the ones to beat ... In the game with East Tennessee, our team hit 40 per cent. Tate had 60 per cent and McGinn had .500 ... In this same ball game there was some difference of opinion as to who got one of our baskets. McGinn shot and the official called it 2 points because the net was touched. However Tate followed the shot and since it was one of our men who hit the net the official scorer gave the basket to Tate. I ask you how can a field goal be scored after the whistle has blown, making the ball dead ...?... McGinn recently had a nice write up in the Asheville Citizen. It's damn time the little man had some publicity . . . Looks like the Davis boy, if he can keep it up, will be the man to step into Tate's place when the latter graduates. Which reminds me, it is a little early but our team will be good next year. We will lose only Barnhorst and have several men coming up such as Gregory and Carter to take his place. The North State Conference had better get ready for next year and the Catamounts.
