  • STUDENT Owned THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN STUDENT Controlled Vol. XV; No. 1 CULLOWHEE, N. C—SEPTEMEBER 8, 1947 Published By Student Assn. Eight Added To W. C. T. C. '47-'48 Faculty Dr. H. T. Hunter, president of Western Carolina Teachers college, stated in an interview today that there would be an increase in the number of faculty members at W. C. T. C. beginning with the fall quarter on September 8. He said that the new employees would be required partly because of the prospective expansion program that will begin sometime within the next two years. The death of E. H. Stillwell created an opening for the head of the History and Social Science department which will be filled by Dr. Rosser H. Taylor. The position is temporarily held by Dr. H. P. Smith. Dr. Taylor is a native of North Carolina and has acquired the Bachelor of Arts degree from Wake Forest college, Master of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Michigan. For a number of years he was head of the English department of Furman university, Greenville, S. C. He has taught during summer sessions at Wake Forest college, Wofford college, and the University of North Carolina. Numerous articles that he has written on history have been published in various magazines. Dr. Agnes Stout, new associate professor of English, has headed the English department at Peace college, Raleigh, for the past two years. She received her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from Woman's college, Greensboro, and her doctorate from the University of North Carolina -at Chapel Hill. Prior to her work at Peace college, Dr. Stout taught at Queen's college, Charlotte, at Greensboro college, and at the University of Mississippi. Mr. W. B. Harrill of Winston- Salem will become professor of Secondary Education and director of public relations. For the past two years he has been senior institutional training^ officer in North —Turn To Page Two Cats Renew Rivalry With Panthers In Asheville On September 20th Dining Hall Converted To Cafeteria Church Activities BAPTIST Rev. Friday—7:30 p. m., Choir practice. METHODIST Rev. R. T. Houts, Pastor Sunday — 10:00 a. m., Sunday school; 11:00, Church service; 5:30, Youth Fellowship. Friday — 7:30 p. m. Senior choir practice. The dining hall of Western Carolina Teachers college will be improved and converted to the cafeteria plan prior to September 8, Miss Louise Henson, dietitian of the college, has announced. The cost is estimated at $30,000. One hundred new tables, seating four persons each, will be installed in the dining hall. The kitchen will get completely new equipment, including gas ranges, steam pressure cookers, and machinery for everything from slicing meat to washing dishes. Most of the equipment is now on hand, and the rest will be here in time to complete the change-over. The cafeteria system is considered to be definitely superior to the eld set-up as each person will have hotter food, and some choice of food, and, as wastage is expected to decrease, the saving should result in better food. Another advantage is that students and faculty members will have a longer period over which they may eat. For example, if someone oversleeps or is late getting out of class, . not be as likely to miss his breakfast or lunch as formerly. Practice Is Now Being Held With Approximately 90 Players Reporting Pre-Session Group Held Meet Sept. 1 Members of the 13th pre-session conference of Western Carolina Teachers college met on the campus September 3-7. The theme was "Helping Lay the Foundation for the Expansion Program." Dean W. E. Bird presided at the first meeting Wednesday evening. The program included: A review of last year's meeting, Thelma J. Finch; a check-up on last year's recommendations, Dean Anne Albright; presentation of problems involved in theme, Tom Garland; and appointment of committees. Thursday, Sept. 4, Nancy Blanton presided. Jimmy Leggette, Eugene Hanneman, and Rebecca Lee stated our needs for the coming year in the light of the expansion program. Maxie Wright and L. R. Taff gave a discussion on "What Publications Can Do." At a later time, Dean Albright presided over the meeting and reports from the faculty planning committee were given by Mr. Sutton, Mr. McDevitt and Miss Hammond. Group meetings of the Student Government units and various clubs were held Friday to consider how they might assist with the expansion program. Later, reports on these meetings were given and discussed. Dr. C. D. Killian presided at the meeting Friday and Mr. Harrill presented plans for Freshman Orientation. The group made an all-day trip Saturday and adjourned at 10 p. m. Western Carolina will take the covers off the 1947 version of the Cats when they meet the High Point Purple Panthers under the lights of Memorial stadium in Asheville, N. C, September 20. The game will be sponsored by the Cosmic club, but will be counted as one of the Cats' home games because students will be admitted on their Lyceum ticket, plus federal tax. Ninety men arrived Monday, September 1, to begin drills for the important North State Conference scrap. Among those reporting were lettermen Co-Captain Clark Pennell, all-conference guard, 1946, and likely choice for Little AU-American; Gene Grogan, all- conference end, 1946; Co-captain Von Ray Harris, fullback; Dan Robinson, tackle; Jim Bryson, back; Ralph Humphries, tackle. - Because of the 6-6 tie with the Panthers last year, this game has created much interest at Western Carolina. Moore Dormitory To Be Equipped With New Furniture McConnell To Be Head Basketball Coach This Year Dr. H. T. Hunter of Western Carolina has announced the appointment of E. R. (Tuck) McConnell, Cornelius, N. C, who will serve as head coach of basketball. Coach McConnell will be an assistant to Coach Tom Young in football and baseball. He has had wide experience in both fields, having completed his M. A. in physical education at the University of North Carolina. Prior to the war he was head coach at the Spartanburg, S. C, high school serving in that capacity for eight years. In 1943 he was commissioned in the U. S. navy in Capt. Tom Hamilton's pre-flight training program. He served as assistant coach to Bernie Bierman at the Iowa Pre-flight school, where his basketball team won the regimental championship. He was sent to Colgate to the V-12 program and later to the Pacific area where he was recreational director. While completing his M. A. at U. N. C. he was a member of Coach Snavely's staff and is thus well versed in the Snavely system. Coach McConnell graduated from Davidson college in 1929 and later attended Geneva college in N. Y. Coaches Young and McConnell played against each other in the dedication game of Kenan stadium. Both coaches have coached the annual Shrine game in Charlotte. Coach McConnell served two years as freshman coach at Wofford college. McConnell, in taking over varsity basketball, will have as a nucleus Coach McDonald's 1946-47 team which represented the North State conference in the N.A.I.B. tournament in Kansas City last year. Coach McDonald will devote his full time to the physical education department of which he is the head. Coach McConnell is married and has two sons. He and his family arrived this week in order to be ready for opening drills on September 1. All rooms in Moore dormitory will be completely re-equipped with maple furniture between summer and fall quarters, according to Mr. R. C. Sutton, business manager. Each room will contain twin maple beds, a maple chest with a large mirror, two matching chairs, and a study desk. New equipment has also been bought for Robertson hall, but is not expected ato be installed before Christmas. Mr. Sutton said he hoped to get new furniture for the parlor in Moore dormitory. New Officers Elected Last Spring Session The election of the class officers last spring quarter served to turn the hill into a hotbed of political activity. Campaign speeches, posters, advertisements, and cigars were all thrown at the students en masse. Practically every trick in the politician's handbag was pulled out, one candidate even advocating a beer parlor in Madison dormitory. One aspirant for president of the student body was hauled about the campus atop an automobile that had bathing beauties painted on it. After the smoke, powder, and smell of perfume had died away, we found the following results: Jack "Pinball" Allison was chosen as president of the Student Body, Howard Barnwell as vice-president, —Turn To Page Four BEAT HIGH POINT, SEPTEMBER 20
