  • Fraternity Suspended Pending University Investigation of Fight by Seth R. Sams News Editor The Theta Xi chapter's University recognition has been suspended pending the investigation of a fight which occurred on September 16 at Sleepy Hollow Apartments on Monteith Gap Road, according to Dr. Bill Haggard, the Dean of Student Affairs. The fight involved members of the Phi Lambda Phi fraternity as well, but Haggard stated that the University "does not have information to support any action against the Phi Lambda Phi fraternity at this time." "All I can say right now is that the situation occurred," Mike Suggs, the Chapter President for the Theta Xi fraternity, said. "We're working with the school, our national headquarters, and our alumni association to resolve it." According to officials with WCU Public Safety Department, the incident seems to have occurred when several members of the Phi Lambda Phi fraternity made comments concerning the Theta Xi fraternity to two females. The two women then went to tell members of Theta Xi the comments that were made during the conversation. For a number of hours, calls were made back and forth between members of the fraternities, and several calls were made to Z91, where songs were dedicated back and forth between the two fraternities. At this point, several members of Theta Xi entered their vehicles and proceeded to Sleepy Hollow Apartments to confront the members of Phi Lambda Phi who had made the comments. The Theta Xi members left without incident. However, according to eye witness accounts, members of Theta Xi returned later, and this time the meeting did not end peacefully. Witnesses told law officials that at one time during the fight, between 40 and 50 people were involved, but law enforcement officials have not been able to confirm this. Witnesses also stated that they heard what sounded like a small caliber handgun being fired at some point during the fight. "We have confirmed that a firearm was discharged," Gene McAbee, the Director of WCU Public Safety, stated. "However, there is some confusion as to when it was discharged. Some witnesses have said the gun was fired and the fight started, and others have said the gun shot ended the fight." No one was injured by the gunfire. Several people involved in the fight did sustain minor injuries, but none serious enough to have needed immediate medical treatment. There was also minor property damage, including a damaged car and a window that was knocked out of an apartment. It is believed that five Jackson County Sheriff Deputies responded to the 911 calls, and that three Public Safety Officers, including McAbee, assisted. Officials at both the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and WCU's Public Safety Department believe that alcohol was involved in the incident. Parking Woes, Eh? To the left you will notice about one-third of the baseball parking lot has become a repository for construction equipment. Where does one park during football games? Also, to the right, you will notice that you can park all day in the one hour parking zone.
