  • inian Volleyball Spends a Busy Week on the Court by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor The Western Carolina University volleyball team wrapped up a busy week of matches last night with a 3-1 (15- 10,15-8,5-15,15-5 ) win over Southern Conference opponent, the Wofford College Terriers in Reid Gym. The victory followed on the heels of a disappointing 1 -3 performance in the Nike/Howard Johnson Challenge from Dayton, OH. With the win, the Catamounts improve their record to 7-6 overall, 2-1 in conference play. Wofford dropped to 2-4 overall, 1 -2 in the Southern Conference. Following the victory, Head Coach Michelle Hansen seemed pleased with the win, but she was quick to point out that she was still looking for more. She wants better performances from her team. The Catamount charge was led by junior Shannon Sweeney with a double- double performance of 11 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Christy Atterbery and senior Keeya McManus also delivered double-figures in kills. McManus recorded a match-high 15 kills. Jessi Fick and Bri Milan-Williams combined for 40 assists, 24 and 16, respectively. Fick also added two service aces. As a team, the Cats recorded 10 total blocks, two of which were solo, while only committing one error. Although Hansen looks for improved play, assistant coach Ben Bodipo- Memba found some positives in the match. "Our blockers looked solid tonight," he said. "Also, minus game three, we played hard. But, we still have a long season ahead of us." Western won the final game with relative ease. The closest Wofford came was when the score was 2-1. The evening started badly for WCU. Wofford jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first set before the Cats had scratched the scoreboard. However, behind the serves of senior Elizabeth Smith and Milan-Williams, Western clawed their way back to take the win. The Catamounts recorded a match high attack percentage, .265, in that first stanza, committing only eight attack errors. Game three provided one dark spot. Western, who took a 3-0 lead, had the advantage until 5-1. From that point on, the Terriers rallied off 14 unanswered points, stunning the large crowd in Reid. WCU saw their attack percentage drop into the negative, -.074, as a result of 10 attack errors, while the Terriers enjoyed their match-high, .200 attack percentage, with match-low five attack errors. Bodipo-Memba looked forward to returning home. "It is a lot easier to play at home," he said. "The fans here tonight were great." In the weekend tournament, the Nike/Howard Johnson Challenge, Western suffered a couple of setbacks in bringing home a fourth place finish from Dayton, OH. Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) was the tournament champion, going undefeated. They beat Wright State for the championship. Christy Atterbery was the Catamounts lone representative on the All- tournament team, marking the second straight time in WCU's three tournaments that she has earned all-tournament hon ors. shutout losses by identical 3-0 scores to the Ohio University Bobcats and also to host, the Wright State Raiders. Western's lone victory in the round-robin play came against Robert Morris, as the Cats turned the shutout tide over on the Colonials. Western wrapped up the tournament by losing to eventual champion, IUPUI, 3-1. The week for WCU volleyball began last Wednesday with a 3-2 loss at the hands of defending Southern Conference champion, the Chattanooga Mocs in Cullowhee. It was Chattanooga that defeated the Cats in last year's Southern Conference Tournament finals. Christy Atterbery led the team with 17 kills, but also committed 11 errors. Sweeney and senior Holly Poff joined Atterbery in kill double-figures with 16 and 10 respectively. The Catamounts return to action this weekend with a pair of road trips. On Friday, Western travels down 1-40 to take on the UNC Greensboro Spartans (6-4). Saturday sees Western travel westward to play the East Tennessee State Lady Bucs in Johnson City, TN. Last Friday, the Cats suffered two QB Snyder out for Season: Starting Role up for Grabs by Don Costello Managing Editor The WCU football program was dealt a striking blow Monday when it learned that quarterback Shawn Snyder will be out for the remainder of the 1998 season. The junior was diagnosed with torn •igaments in his left ankle and a fractured fibula. WCU sports medicine officials made the diagnosis Monday morning and ■mmediately said it would end Snyder's season. Snyder underwent surgery Tuesday rooming to repair the ligament damage. Snyder left Saturday's game at The Citadel in the third quarter with 8:21 remaining and the Cats up 14-0. It is the Same ankle that he injured in the preseason and kept him out of the season °Pener at Duke. Head coach Bill Bleil does not be- eve the newly diagnosed injuries are closely related to Snyder's preseason injury. He said X-rays were taken after the Duke game and there was no break in the fibula at that time. Snyder's numbers up to that point were 7-for-l 3 with 93 yards passing and nine yards on the ground. The Cats will have two options at quarterback when they face East Tennessee this weekend. Justin Cella, a sophomore transfer from the University of Illinois, started in place of Snyder at Duke and came in at the Citadel game. He is 15-for-32 with 89 yards in his two appearances this season. Cella said he knew right after the game that Snyder's ankle injury was serious. "It didn't look right," he said. Cella hopes that getting more practice this week will help to learn the Cats offense. Cella will share the snaps on the practice field this week with Darren Miller, a freshman from Milford Academy in New Jersey, who threw for 925 yards last season at prep school. Western was planning on red shirting Miller this season. "Miller is quite talented but doesn't have many reps," Bleil said. "He will be getting more in practice this week." As of press time, the Catamounts coaching staff had not made a decision on which quarterback would start this weekend. Bleil said he would not guarantee that the starter would get all the snaps in the ETSU game. ^3 Freshman Darren Miller Sophmore Justin Cella Photos by T.K. Roberts
