  • 20 Western Carolinian November 2,1995 Sports Cats Scratch Their Way Out of Rut by Jason Queen Associate Editor Attention, Western Carolina football fans: don't drink from the cup of hopeless despair just yet. After four straight embarrassing defeats, the Catamounts bounced back Saturday with a 31-14 victory over VMI in front of an overflowing Homecoming crowd of almost 9,000. Freshman Terence Stokes (see preceding page) paced the Cats with a superb rushing performance, as he had 27 carries for 142 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Chad Greene had trouble passing effectively but did score two rushing touchdowns of his own. With Western holding a slim 17-14 lead to start the fourth quarter, Greene found his offense backed into a corner and felt the momentum swinging toward the Keydets. VMI had scored on the last play of the third quarter to cut the Cats' lead to three. After an incomplete pass and a three-yard run by Stokes, Western faced third down and seven from its own 30 yard line. But Greene found tight end Kawasak Penn for 13 yards and a huge first down. Greene then sandwiched a 1 6-yard draw play between four Stokes runs that covered 33 yards to set up a first and goal at the eight yard line. Fullback Micheal Stewart promptly capped off the drive with an eight-yard jaunt to paydirt on the next play to give the Cats a comfortable 10-point lead that would not be threatened again. Greene opened the scoring with a 30-yard touchdown scamper with 7:08 left in the first quarter. Stokes had a key nine-yard run on third and three at midfield to keep the drive going. The Cats defense was suffocating in the quarter, allowing VMI only 13 yards on its first three possessions. When VMI did finally get something going, the defense buckled up when it had to keep the Keydets off the scoreboard. VMI marched 40 yards to the WCU 28 on its final possession of the first quarter. But Donnell Brinson blocked their 45-yard field-goal attempt to keep the shutout in tact. VMI fought back on their first possession of the second quarter, though. Running back Thomas Haskins broke through the left side and ran 48 yards to the Catamount nine yard line before Robert Tucker could track him down. After a penalty against the Keydets, they ran the old flanker reverse pass to score on second and goal from the 16 to tie the game at 7-7 with 10:06 left in the half. On VMI's next possession, punter Howie Lowden shanked his kick to give the Cats excellent field position at the VMI 43. On second and 10, Greene found David Patten for a 38-yard Senior Chad Greene's 30-yard scoring run. Photo by OPI pass down to the five yard line. After three rushing attempts covered only four yards, Greene broke the plane of the goal line on fourth and goal from the one to give the Cats the lead for good. The Keydets nearly added a field goal at the end of the half. But, in one of the most amazing stats you will ever see, Donnell Brinson blocked his second field goal of the game to keep the score 14-7. Ken Hinsley added a 32-yard field goal and VMI scored a touchdown to make it 17-14 and set up the Cats' big opening possession of the fourth quarter. On the Cats' next drive after Stewart's touchdown, it was all Stokes. He carried five times for 38 yards and a touchdown to put the game out of reach. Coach Steve Hodgin loved what he saw in his sensational young running back. "Terence came off the bench and gave our offense the spark it needed. His running gave us something we have not had this season," he said, after the game. The Cats will enjoy having this Saturday off, as they travel to Boone November 11. They will face hated rival Appalachian State, who is currently ranked second in the country, and try to recapture the Old Mountain Jug, which has been in Boone for 10 straight years. Catamount Teams Finish 3rd and 4th in Cross Country Tourney by Brian Clark StaffReporter Greenville, SC-The week leading up to the Southern Conference Championships is always stressful and intense. This year proved to be no different as both the men and women Catamounts considered themselves to have a great opportunity to return to Cullowhee with the title. Unfortunately, neither team was able to capitalize on a victory, but both teams had great showings. The Cat's cross-country teams served notice on the other teams in the Southern Conference this past Sunday afternoon that the Catamounts will be serious championship contenders come next fall. WCU's teams posted their lowest point totals ever in a Southern Conference championship meet as the men's team finished third, and the women's team finished fourth in the meet held on Furman University's golf course. East Tennessee won the meet, and broke Appalachian State's two year reign at the top of the men's standings. It was ETSU's 13th men's championship since joining the conference in 1978. ETSU finished with 40 points to App. State's 52. The Cat's were third with 68 points- it's lowest total in 19 championship meets-and was followed by UT-Chattanooga (81), Marshall (127), VMI (136), Georgia Southern (196), the Citadel (212), and Furman (216). Furman won its third straight women's championship with a 39 point total, which bettered ASU's 74 points. UTC, with 84-points, edged out WCU (86) for third place by two scoring places. Marshall (119) was fifth followed by ETSU (123), Davidson (164) and Georgia Southern (227). The fourth place finish equaled WCU's best-ever team effort in a championship meet. The Catamount men established themselves in the front pack early on. Shortly after the mile mark a pack of about ten runners made a break away, with none of the Cats opting to go with them. A chase group of around ten runners quickly formed, with the Cats comprising five of the runners. Over the next several miles the lead pack began to break up, and so did their chase pack. The Cats' Jack Murphy, Turner Norris, Adam Wallen, and Brian Clark continued to work together and lead a charge. This Catamount pack stayed together, running like a championship team, until the last mile, and even then they stayed within several seconds of each other. Over the last mile Captain Jack Murphy (Sr., Spartanburg, SC) stepped to the forefront and pushed the Catamounts in. Murphy placed tenth among the 77 runners over the 8 kilometer course (5 miles) and was named to the all-conference team. Teammate Turner Norris (Jr., Asheville, NC) finished five seconds behind Murphy in 11th place, the third time he has finished in the top 11 places in a conference meet. Adam Wallen (Fr., Hendersonville, NC) and Brian Clark (So., Forest City, NC) placed 14th and 15th respectively, with the same time cocking. Collin Webster (So., Taiwan) placed 18th, only seven seconds behind Wallen and Clark. The Cats only had 18 seconds separating their 1 st and 5th man, a mark of a championship team. Coach Danny Williamson called his men's team performance "a total team effort" and said he was "well pleased" with the way the Catamounts ran. In the women's race, junior Kristen Savery and freshman Erica Thiemann, both out of East Lake High, in Palm Harbor, FL, were named to the women's all-conference team, the first time WCU has placed two runners among the top ten at the conference meet. Savery established herself at the front of the pack early on. Eventual winner, Furman's Heather Vanderbrake, broke away from the pack and began to spread the field out. Savery managed to stay close to the front during this and found herself in fifth place with about a 1/4 of a mile to go. Savery threw it in overdrive and passed UTC's Michelle Marshall to move in to fourth. From there Savery cruised into the finish with a great performance, only 27 seconds off the winning place, and 13 off second place. Thiemann turned in the second best performance by a Lady Cat freshman in the meet in placing tenth. Two more WCU freshman, Lauren Ballard (Huntersville, NC) and Anne Gardner (Pembroke Pines, FL), finished 19th and 23rd respectively. Emily Redmon (So., Asheville, NC) completed WCU's scoring contingent with a 30th place finish. Fifty-nine runners competed in the five kilometer (3.1 miles) race. "Our women had the opportunity to finish second, but just couldn't capitalize as two of our runners who usually finish in the top four places did not run like they normally would," said Williamson.
