  • HERD from the previous page popped a 23-footer for three points at the 7:34 mark to put the Herd up by six. Six-foot-nine-inch center Tom Curry banked a six-footer to put Marshall ahead by eight, 67-59. The spurt didn't end until Marshall had a 72-59 lead, built during a four-minute-and-three- second scoreless streak by the Catamounts. It didn't help the Catamounts that the Herd went from a man-to-man defense in the first half to a zone in the second; the1 Catamounts' best outside shooter, guard Robert Hutchison, suffered through one of his more frustrating nights, hitting his first shot and then missing his last eight. Although forward Bennie Goettie, who again workhorsed his way to a game-high 24 points, scored In the lane with 1:06 left and cut Marshall's lead to 77-71, the Catamounts couldn't get any closer than that. And for the first time in their Southern Conference history, they were eliminated from ♦he conference tournament field. "I'm dissapointed for the kids, for the school... I think it's an unfortunate situation that the ninth- place team doesn't make the tournament." said Krusen. "We had some chances to win this one. We competed and I feel like we're playing better, but we just didn't have the year In terms of wins and losses that was expected of us." The one bright spot of the evening was that Western held Henderson, the front-runner for repeating as league player of the year, to eight points, snapping a 61 - game streak of double-figure scoring for the stellar point guard. The last time Henderson had failed to score in double figures was Feb. 15, 1986. Ironically, that was in Reid Gym against the Catamounts in a game the Catamounts won by 15 points. A small touch of Irony on a February night for a painful season. Will The Southern Conference Tourney Produce An NCAA Winner? ...From Previous Page Friday night's games feature a pair of matchups that don't appear as appetizing simply because the teams playing weren't expected to do as well as they have this season. Furman (18-9) proved to be the suprise of the conference by finishing second and posting its best finish and record since 1980. But the Paladins have been inconsistent, especially out of the conference, where they won at Wake Forest yet lost at home to UNC-Asheville. Furman will take on VMI (10-17) in the 7 o'clock game. The Keydets provided Western Carolina with one of the Catamounts' league victories, but they've also beaten Chattanooga and Davidson and went into overtime at Marshall. In the other game, a pair of turnaround teams will battle for a berth in the semifinals. East Tennessee State (13- 14) managed to rebound from a 7-21 year and play with four freshmen a good deal of the season to get Into its suprising No. 3-seeded spot. The Bucca neers, who on Jan. 18 handed Marshall its other league loss, won at Davidson on Monday night after being shellacked at The Citadel last Saturday. The Bucs will take on sixth- seeded Appalachian State (16-12), which also rebounded from a 20-loss year and just two weeks ago was the hottest team in the league. The Mountaineers head into the tournament with four straight losses, however. Upsets in Southern Conference tournament play are more often the rule than the exception. Western's win over Chattanooga last year was preceded by a dramatic East Tennesse upset of Marshall in 1986 and a VMI overtime shocker over Chattanooga in the 1985 semifinals. But the only true upset among league teams will come after the tournament has been played. Then the rest of the league will find out whether the high-and- mighty Thundering Herd from Marshall can win an NCAA playoff game, something it failed to do in 1984,1985 and 1987. Don't bet on it. dfh «' wm^mnm' uiiiiwrn The Western Carolinian Page9 Wednesday, March 3, 1988 SOCON from previous page 1 p.m. — Winners of Friday afternoon games play. 2 p.m. — Winners of Friday night games play. (Televised by Sports Staff Chris Geis Editor Billy Graham Editing/Design Steve Almasy Sports Writer Edwin Carlton Photos Junior right-hander Stewart Keyes(left), an all-Southern Conference selection last year, helped the Catamounts to an 11 -1 win in the home opener against Eastern Kentucky. Keyes pitched a seven-hitter against the Colonels. Maik Haskett Photo BASEBALL, continued from the previous page The Colonels bright spot of the series came In game two as they knocked out 12 hits. Junior Gary Volpe (1-2) struggled and EKU's Scott Privatera provided the winning margin with a two-run double in the fifth. Outfielder Keith Leclair and Fairey hit back- to-back home runs for the Catamounts in the fifth, but junior Scott Sarkon shut WCU down the rest of the way. GAME THREE WCU 12, EKU 0 While Saturday was cold and blustery. Sunday was a perfect day for baseball — that is for the Catamounts. They started a double header sweep with a 12-0 shellacking in the series third game. Malchesky launched three home runs and tied a WCU record when he sent two EKU pitches over the left field fence in the Catamounts eight run. third inning. The transfer from UNC-Charlotte had four RBI's in the game. Sinicki (2-2) breezed through the Colonel lineup allowing four hits while striking out six. He retired EKU 1- 2-3 in the seventh to earn the complete game victory.
