Western has a $250,000 grant to coordinate the efforts of project participants—scientists from Mississippi State University's Center for Seed Technology and workers for Catholic Relief Services, Lutheran World Relief and Save the Children Federation. The Peace Corps' African Food Systems Initiative is also assisting. The project participants belong to the Joint PVO (Private Voluntary Organizatlons)/Unlver- slty Rural Development Center, a consortium of 30 universities and voluntary organizations that collaborate on expertise to carry out world relief projects. The Joint Center In headquartered at WCU. University members are WCU, Auburn, East Carolina, Drexel, Mississippi State, NC A&T, Arizona, Georgia. Virginia Tech, and Virginia State. Currently, the Joint Center is administering a ffve-year, $ 1.5 million water harvestlng/aquacul- ture project In 33 Third World countries. The project Is funded by AID and carried out by six organizations and Auburn University. The Joint Center was founded In 1979 to strengthen development work and to design strategies for rural areas. Services Include management skills, technical assistance, applied research, training and data processing. The Study Committee on Hunter's Safety and Wildlife will ask the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (WRC) to examine the feasibility of establishing such centers which could be used to train first-time buyers of hunting licenses, as well as officers of WRC and other law enforcement officers, on firearms safety.
