estern arohnian VOICE OF THE STUDENTS Thursday, April 14,1988 (704) 22 SGA Presidential Candidates Face Run-Off Next Wednesday; Stowe Wins VP in Landslide Amendments to the Constitution Approved by the Student Body; Senators Elected; LMP Officers Named By COLIN BURCH with ERIN MILLNER Staff Writer Editor Jim Saltz upset the favored candidate in yesterday's SGA Presidential election. Saltz recevved 424 votes to Doug Henderson's 396 votes, with neither acquiring the simple majority (50 percent of the votes cast, plus one) needed to walk away with the title of SGA President. Both candidates will continue their campaigns in hopes of winning in next Wednesday's run-off election. Senator Mark Weaver, the third presidential candidate, recieved 128 votes, and Is Upset-Minded Saltz Escaped Publicity Jim Saltz, whose first place finish in Wednesday's voting suprised many, wasa late- registering and therefore relatively un-publl- cized candidate. A Junior majoring In Physical Education and Sports Management with a 3.5 GPR, he is the chaplain and an executive officer in Sigma Phi Eplsilon social fraternity. He Is also a member of the Physical Education and Sports Management clubs and works with the athletic department. Other credentials Include a past membership of the Alpha Lambda Delta freshman honor society and a current membership of Western Gold. The last presidential candidate to enter the race, Saltz' one word description of his campaign is "communication." He feels his "good reputation with both students and administration will enable him to get Ideas from students and confidently present those ideas to the administration". Changes he would like to see Include better lighting and the Installation of emergency phones in far parking lots and the walkways from the lots to the dorms. He would also like to see a decrease in student apathy, and he believes this can be remedied with more activities being provided for students on weekends. out of the election. Jonathan Senk, who announced his candidacy on March 31, was declared ineligible to run for office by the SGA election commission. His disqualification was based on his second-semester freshman status, the same status that disqualified President-elect Colby from assuming office after last spring's elections. In the vice-presidential election Jeff Stowe had a clear victory with his 524 votes over candidate Alex Greene's 163 and Doug Wlndley's undisclosed number write-In votes. In other election returns, Tim Duqette and Julie Long, who were unopposed In their campaigns, won the LMP presidential and vice-presidential positions, respectively. The senator-at-large seats were taken by Connie Heath, with 566 votes, and Larry Taylor, with 508 votes. Two-thirds of the voting students ratified the amendments to the SGA constitution. The amendments will now be sent to the Board of Trustees for their review and approval. Ten students were elected to serve as commuter senators; Trent Procter, Mark Speece, Julie Dunn, Brian Burnlow, Barry Mason, Terry Xanthos, Alton Johnson, Steve Turner, Mary Day, and Kenny Loclcero. Four other students were elected by write-in vote to serve as commuter senators, but the election committee has yet to verify their eligibility for office. The two presidential candidates remaining In the race were unavailable for comment after the election returns were announced late Wednesday evening. Next Weeks Run-Off Balloting Will Occur on the University Center Lawn, or, in the Case of Bad Weather, in Dodson Cafeteria Communications Board Names Bailey New WWCU Manager Other Appointed Positions at Campus Radio Station Filled By JENNIFER HARDY Staff Writer The Campus Communications Board of WCU chose Charles Bailey Tuesday night as the new station manager of WWCU for the 1988-89 school year. Bailey Is a current sophomore who has worked at WWCU during the 1986-87 school year and over the summer. He Is the station's news director this year and has been acting program director since March. Bailey feels that he can bring more potential to a station with a lot of good ideas but lacking the organization to follow through with them. He also plans to get WWCU more involved In school activities including more live coverage around campus . He applied for station manager because he feels the position gives "greater mobility among the station" and the ability to "pull it all together." The executive staff of WWCU was appointed by the regular staff Tuesday night. Beth Young from Marion was chosen as the station business manager ford second term. She will continue to be In charge of the budget and buying equipment. Michael Jones was voted as the new program director. A freshman from Hendersonville, Jones has plans to include more "album oriented rock". He says that rather than play the same songs over and over again, he wants to add this catagory in an attempt to "diversify the music." Jones feels that he was the most technically quaillfled staff member returning to WWCU for the postlon of program director. Freshman Drew Parham of Charlotte and sophomore Fredrick Mason of Wilson were see WWCU next page ELECTION DAY The Student Government Association's annual elections - controversial affairs over the past few years - went off without a hitch yesterday on the University Center lawn. The Red Cross said WCU fell behind after a poor showing In the last blood drive in Cullowhee. ASU issued a challenge in October saying its students could donate more blood per capita than WCU's students. Western responded by saying that's a bloody He. The American Red Cross bloodmoblle will visit WCU Monday through Wednesday, April 18-20, from noon until 5 p.m. In the auxiliary gym- Center. Bloodmoblle visits to WCU are usually based in the Grandroom of Hinds University Center, but that building Is closed for asbestos removal and renovation of the air conditioning system. The goal for the three-day visit will be 450 units. Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity are sponsoring the bloodmoblle visit.
