THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN FALL SPECIAL Fnmnt Pace IS sports Began In 1933 Catamount-a unique and interesting origin The mascot for Western Carolina University's athletic teams is the "Catamount." It has a unique and interesting origin. According to Clinton F. Dodson. a retired WCU professor and faithful supporter ol athletics at Western Carolina for over forty years, the term "Catamount" was first applied to the Western Carolina football team in 1933 by its head coach, C.C. Poindexter. "Catamount." according to Professor Dodson, was the general term used by earlier Cullowhee natives to describe any of several wild cats thought to roam the mountainous vicinity such as the cougar, the bobcat or the panther. In Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, Catamounts arc defined as "any of various wild cats" and "short for cal-a-niount." Coach Poindexter, reported knowing the fierce spirit, savage attacks, and lightning quick moves of these assorted animals, wished to have his athletes react in such a manner on the playing field and therefore began calling his players "Catamounts." Two stuffed Catamounts are located in the foyer of Rcid Health and Physical Education Building. The University of Vermont adopted the Catamount as its mascot at about the same time as Western Carolina and is the only other college or univesity in the United Suites using the nickname. The intercollegiate athletic program at Western Carolina University is rapidly becoming one of the finest of its size in the nation as is mirrored in the performance record of its teams over the past seven yean. WCU offers a varied athletic program which aids in the development of pride and identification for both the student body and the region. Currently, WCU sponsors men's teams in eight sports—football, basketball, track and field, cross country, tennis, golf and soccer. Women's intercollegiate competition takes place in basketball, volleyball, tennis and gymnastics. In addition, the department of health and physical education offers a comprehensive program of intramural activities that annually draws participation from an average of 3,000 students. WCU competes as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Men) and The Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (Women). WCU became a member of the Southern Conference in 1976 and will be classified as a major university for intercollegiate competition. The Catamounts have plavcd before crowds in excess of 11.000 and in storied basketball houses such as the Milwaukee Arena, N.C. State's Reynolds Coliseum, Kansas City's Memorial Auditorium, and the Greensboro Coliseum, all sites of previous NCAA tournament play- Opponents in the past few seasons included N.C. State, Marquette and Auburn. Football Catamount football has emerged in the past decade into one of the nation's most consistent winners on the college division level. WCU has finished among the top ten in three of the past seven seasons before becoming a major college in 1977 and its 9-1 record in 1974 earned the Cats a berth in the NCAA Division II championship playoffs. Western has played teams trom major conierences such as the Mid-American, Southern, Southland, and the Ohio Valley, a highlv .regarded college division league, plus numerous major and Division 11 independents. WCU is now a member of The Southern Conference and posted a 6-5 record last vear. Future schedules show the majority of opponents to be major schools.
