  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN SPECIAL FALL ISSUE BRASSTOWN-Begun in 1926 as a settlement school for the Brasstown community, J. C. Campbell Folkschool has gone from educating only the residents — when there were no roads — to an education thrust on crafts. Weaving, pottery, enameling, silversmithing, woodcarving, woodworking, and iron work are the crafts that are presently being taught at the school. education. Today students have the option of taking classes without grades, or being graded to receive credit through colleges or universities. WCU is one of the students has opened his own blacksmith shop in Michigan, and is earning his living working with iron. If the school is to continue, it PAGE 9 must grow Masters said the school hopes to grow to its capacity of 50 students within 2 or 3 years. "It's survival this way ..or we close down." Survival depends on instruction and production. Instructors are salaried, and during the winter months when they are not teaching, they are producing. Everything produced is sold, either at crafts fairs or in the schools gift shop. Administrative Assistant Becky Burgiss said the community as such does not need the school anymore. People can get their education at other schools in the area, and radio and television have become most people's entertainment. In the past, visitors were few and far between. One woman who took a class six years ago said in the whole two weeks she was there, the school received no visitors. Masters said that sleeping bag-toting hitchhikers were given free meals and a floor on which to sleep in the past. But the volume of visitors now received makes such hospitality financially impossible. However, the school still encourages visitors to come look the place over. The instructors and students do not seem to mind the influx of travelers who are passing through. "Taking care of visitors is part of being a teaching establishment," said Lee Davis, pottery instructor. Potter Lee Davis explains to his class and visitors his feelings on the difference between freedom and sloppiness in art. Davis has taught at the Folkschool for one year. Before that, he taught at Kansas State. Campbell Folkschool emphasizes crafts The only real community event now is folk dancing, held twice a week. The goal of the school, which was once to provide the community with not only basic living skills, but also a cultural background, has now changed to Another policy of the school that has changed is one concerning grades and credits.
