  • WCU-ASU ...from page IS came into Whitmire Stadium in 1975 sporting a 7-2 record to meet the Catamounts who were 2-7 and were upset 20-11. There will be no conference title hopes on the line this time around. Appalachian State saw its chances for a Southern Conference title vanish via a 21-20 defeat at the hands of Furman last Saturday before a regional television audience while Western Carolina watched its hopes for a fifth consecutive winning season kicked away when Marshall's Barry Childers booted a conference record 59 yard field goal with 0:07 showing to tie the Catamounts 13-13. A win could set ASU on a course to its best record since 1975 while Western could salvage the season with an upset. As the Catamount's Coach Bob Waters, who has been through 11 of these games, puts it: "The majority of our supporters gauge the success of our season on the outcome of our game with Appalachian State." The game has all the makings of an aerial battle featuring one of the nation's top rated quarterbacks and two of major college football's top receivers. Steve Brown, ASU's signal caller, is just 16 yards shy of 2,000 yards passing this season and ranks sixth nationally in total offense. His favorite target is all-America Rick Beasley who led the nation last season in pass receptins and has caught 38 this season for 827 yards and 6 TDs. Western Carolina counters with its "Mix and Mash" passing game featuring the quarterbacking duo of Ronnie Mixon and David Mashburn. The sophomores have combined for 1752 yards and 7 TDs. Their favorite target has been 5-9 Gerald Harp, the nation's leading receiver a few weeks ago, who has caught 44 for 687 yards this season. The matchup between Harp and Beasley is unique. Harp became the fourth player in major college football history to reach the 3.000 yard mark in pass reception yardage three weeks ago and Beasley climbed past the magic number last Saturday. Harp's career totals now read 186 receptions for 3,128 yards and 25 TDs while Beasley stands close behind with 172 catches for 3,003 yards and 22 touchdowns. Both passing games were nationally ranked last week, but the difference this season is apparently with the defense where Appalachian State leads the Southern Conference. "They (ASU) have the most explosive offense we have seen this season, but the biggest difference between this year and last year is their defense. They plav defense with a tremendous amount of emotion," says Waters. Waters says that might be the formula for his team this weekend. "This team is playing like it is waiting for something bad to happen on every play and when you play like that, something bad usually happens. Hopefully, the emotions that are generated by a game with Appalachian State will take us to a point this week that will overcome our mistakes," he explained. Soccer Team News Western Carolina's Soccer Team, coached by Malcolm Loughlin, got off to a slow start this season with a 0-7 record coming by a route of tough road schedule against several nationally prominent teams. Among the opponents, were the No. 1 team in the country, Alabama A&M, The University of South Carolina, and top ten Southern Conference power ASU. "We didn't start out very good, true, but hopefully there was method in our madness. We played some very, very strong teams early in the season, with the purpose to strengthen our own play so that when we came around to playing our conference games, all scheduled later in the season, we would prove ready and hopefully improve our standing in the Southern Conference." Those were the words of Coach Loughlin, whose currently fourth-place Catamounts will be trying to move up in the conference standing and improve on their 5-11 record with 5 games remaining on the schedule. Taylor Warner, the leading scorer and Paul Garth have helped the comeback but both have also been injured, along with Rupert Stout and other players. "Garth was missed in the Furman game," Loughlin added, "...it was a somewhat controversial game inasmuch as that in one stage of the game, Furman had 12 players on the field...on top of that, we scored a goal that would have at one point tied up the game. Unfortunately, the referee disallowed it." The Cats face a difficult schedule in their remaining five games. Four of the games are conference games, and four are on the road. WCU hosts Davidson Sunday at 2:00 in the final home game of the season. Coach Loughlin has been pleased with the fan support this Continues on page 18... Nitery Specials Weds.
