News file • The Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina, Inc., has presented a $50,000 check to WCU to create an endowed scholarship fund for students pursuing careers in insurance, risk management, or general business. • Nominations will be accepted through Tuesday, Sept. 23, for WCU's recipient of the Board of Governors' Award for Excellence in Teaching. The board for the 16- campus University of North Caro­lina system established the award, which has a $7,500 stipend, to recognize excellence in teaching at each of the 16 UNC institutions. Moore of Sylva, a former First Union Bank executive, was elected chairman of the WCU board of trustees Sept. 10 at the board's first meeting of the new academic year. He was one of three officers elected by the board. Adelaide Daniels Key of Asheville was elected vice chair, and Phillip D. Walker of Hickory was elected secretary. Moore succeeds Kenneth F. Wilson of Waynesville. Wilson left the board after serving the maximum two consecutive four-year terms. • Thomas M. Apodaca of Hendersonville, Sam L. Wiggins of Waynesville, and Walker were sworn in as new members of the board. Key, R. Philip Haire of Sylva, and Kaye S. Davis of Robbinsville were re­appointed to the board. • Stephen P. Yurkovich, associate dean of research and graduate studies, has been named acting dean of the Graduate School, filling a vacancy created by the departure of Anthony A. Hickey, who resigned as dean to teach in the department of anthropology and sociology. Yurkovich has been •associate dean of research and graduate studies since 1991. The appointment was approved by the WCU board of trustees at its quarterly meeting Sept. 10. Beegle, professor of . accounting and information systems, named acting head of the department of accounting and information systems. • A book by Gloria Houston, My Great Aunt Arizona, has received the Seal of Quality Medal of Merit from the Family Channel, which resulted in a full color ad in the August 15 edition of USA Today. The book has won nine national awards and several regional awards since its . publication by HarperCollins in 1993. The book is a tribute to Houston's great aunt, Arizona Houston Hughes, a teacher for 72 years in Western North Carolina public schools. Houston is author-in-residence at WCU. • Kathyrn Stripling Byer, WCU poet-in-residence, participated in the North Carolina Women Writers Festival at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Sept. 19-20. Byer gave one of the opening "keynote" readings at the festival, a major celebration of published and aspiring women authors from throughout North Carolina. • A paper by three faculty members in the department of communication and theatre arts has been selected "top faculty paper" for 1997 by the Public Relations Society of America. Co-authors Betty A. Farmer, John W. Slater, and Kathleen S. Wright will present their paper, "The Role of Communication in Achieving Shared Agenda Under New Organizational Leadership," at the society's national conference, scheduled Nov. 8-11 in Nashville, Tennessee.
