Stories of mountain folk broadcast: 2013-05-18

  • The show begins with Amy’s story “Parade Rest,” in which she recounts her time in U.S. Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. The story is accompanied by “I See the Lord” performed by David Bauer. Doreyl’s guest on Creative Corner is Judy Sipes, who plays several instruments, including mandolin, dulcimer, fiddle and autoharp. She is originally from Kentucky, and she talks about growing up in a musical family and learning from her family. She also talks about preserving traditional music through regular events held at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center and her other activities. After the interview she performs “Come All Ye Fair & Tender Ladies” and “Wildwood Flower” on the autoharp. On Stories of Mountain Folk, Amy talks with Faye Bryson Parker, who talks about life with her family and her family’s history in Jackson County. The interview is followed by “Like an Eagle” by the Cockman Family. An interview with Jean Christy from May 23, 2009, is then repeated. It is followed by “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” by Jacob Jones. On Down Another Road, Judy continues her talk with Lucretia Speas. She talks about coming to western North Carolina to go to college at Brevard and then Mars Hill and discusses her love for the mountains. “Pretty Polly,” performed by Lucretia Speas, Greg Speas and Darci DeWulf follows the interview, and “Housewife Blues” by Ginny McAfee ends the show.
