Dear Sir:- I have been very much interested in your article on "The Backwoods Rifle" appearing in Outing, as wall as the artici now running in All Outdoors, as I have been making a study of Kentucky rifles and their descendants and have a small collection of them. Recently I obtained a rille about which I am unable to obtain any information as to where it was mads, or the date, although it is undoubtedly quits old. It is marked "A. Schweitzer" in script on the barrel. I got it in Chambersburg, Pa. It is now a percussion lock, but evidently has been changed over from flint lock. The barrel is 46 inches long, about .56 caliber, with six deep grooves, which make a half turn in the length of the barrel. The sights are of the usual Kentucky type, immovable, the rear sight being about 17 inches from the eye when aiming. The stock is of curly maple, full length and the rifle is about 63 inches long over all, weighs around 11 pounds. It has a single trigger and the mountings are brass, with an ornamented patch box. There is quite a good deal of carving on the wood. I haven't shot it yet, for the reason that I have no bullet mould which will fit it. However, I am in hopes of finding one some time.

In a letter to Horace Kephart on November 9, 1918, Roy C. McHenry praises Kephart for his articles on rifles in “Outing” and “All Outdoors” publications. Mr. McHenry asks Kephart to identify a rifle he acquired in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, marked “A. Schweitzer”, and describes the gun in detail. He would like to know the rifle’s manufacturing location and date.
