  • Tennessee. Just imagine the scenery from this more or less isolated mountain—to the southeast, at a short distance, tower the Great Smokies with such prominent peaks in view as: Round Top, Le Conte, Mt. Alexander, Laurel Top, Mt. Guyot and Sharp Top, the highest group of peaks east of of the Rockies. The hike starts at Carson Springs. We hike to top of th3 mountain and then eat our lunch in a large chestnut orchard. Leave Saunders System at 7 A. M. sham. Round trip hiking distance 8 miles. Trail gentl? and smooth. November 29-30 SHARP TOP And now we have a real worth-while hike which includes inspection of one of the largest power development projects in the country with capacity of 45,300 horse power and costing $13,000,- 000.00. Drive direct to Hartford by way of Newport. At Hartford Mrs. J. I. Clark will furnish accommodations and she sets a real good table so we will not be disappointed on this score. We should arrive in time for supper, get an early breakfast next morning and take the bus for Waterville, four miles distant. Here the giant power plant is located, which is owned by the Carolina Power and Light Co., with its three big turbines run by water conveyed thru the six-mile tunnel equal to 14 ft. in diameter and then thru the 8 ft. steel pipe or pen stock 1-5/8" thick and with pressure from an 855 ft. head of water. The dam at the intake, 12 miles up this river, is 183 ft. high, and backs water up for six miles. There are 14 flood gates, •While this is a very fine hike, it is a hard one. Another hike, an easy one-day trip, is scheduled for this same weekend. Take your choice. 64
