- ^ K*f On numerous maps of t , 18th oentury, displaying more r less of the Southern Appalachian region, that I have examined in the Library of Congress and elsewhere, the highlands of North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia are grouped, with vague location, under tho nam® Appalachian Mountains (spelled by eaoh cartographer to suit himself). On eat a few they are entitled Alleghany Mountains, likewise with variant spelling, Tho present-day Cherolsees, hero on the Okonaluftee River, do not agree on any general name for the Great Smoky range* Some say "Gluk-shus-tee," meaning Smokei hut older and better Informed Indians have assured me that this is only their translation of the English name. In confirmation of this latter view, I have found significant data of nearly a hundred years ago, G. W, S*> Peatherstonhaugh, an English traveler, in his book ^a Sxcrusion through the Slave States and a Canoe Voyage up the Hinnay Sotor (London, *l8"44), which was wri't't'en in 'the* form of a diary, states, under date of Aug. 8, 1837 that "Being desirous of learning whether the Cherokees had any distinct name for the system of ridges which now goes by the name of the Alleghany or Appalachian Mountains, to oblige me, he [Lewis RossJ brother of the principal chief] interrogated some very ancient Cherokeeer bat not one of them had ever heard of their having a dietinet name* The war-path which their ancestors used in crossing them to fight the Mengwee, or Five Nations, had a particular namej but they knew of no other, neither did they know of anything of the words Alleghany or Appalaohy." TTe arrive at something mors to the point when we examine old treaties, legislative acts and court records. - In tho record of the ^cob Brown purchase, 1772, the line is described as following "the Great Iron Mountains" from the head of Indian Greek to the "Nonachuchy" River* In the Act of 1777 hy wfeich the General Assembly of North Carolina erected tho district of Washington int© a county (the same including all of the present State of Tennessee) it is delimited as follows•- "Beginning at tho most North ifosterly Part of the County of Wilkes, on the Virginia Linei theneo running with the Line of Wilkes County, to a Point Thirty Six Miles south of the Virginia Linet theneo duo West, to the ridge of the great iron Mountain whioh heretofore? divided the Hunting Grounds of the Overhill Cherokees, from those of the Middle Settlements and Valley* thence running a South Westerly Course, along the saidSidge, to the I/haeoy fountain, where the trading Bath crosses the same from the Valley to the Overhillsj thence South with the Line of thie State, adjoining the Stats of South Carolinat thence due West to the great River Mississippi! thence up the said River the Courses thereof, to a point due West from ths Beginning? theneo du® Bast with the Line of this State, to the Beginning*" (Stat© Records of North Carolina, XXIV., 141) It is elear from this that the name Great Iron Mountain was officially applied; in tho revolutionary period, not only to the present Iron Mountain hut also to the northern IMaka, Bald and Groat Smoky fountains. In November, 1789, th® General Assembly of North Carolina offered to cede tho aforesaid Washington County (the future state/of Tennessee) to the tfaited States. Tho Act of Cssslon, aftsr delixaitlng the boundary from the intersection of the Virginia Line with Stone Ma* Mountain and thence on to the Painted Rock on the French Broad River, continues in tiles'© words* " •«* thence along the highest ridge of the said mountain, to the plaee where it is called the Great Iron or Smoaky Mountain, thence along the extreme height of tho said mountain, to tho place where it is called Unlcoy or iJhaka Mountain,

This 1931 correspondence, from Horace Kephart to Verne Rhoades (1881-1969), concerns the nomenclature of the Appalachian mountains. Horace Kephart (1862-1931) was a noted naturalist, woodsman, journalist, and author and promoter of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
